What Radio did this go with?
#3
In years past, I've seen people looking for a multiplex unit like that. Many times, when radios were pulled from junked cars, the puller forgot or omitted taking this unit as part of the set. Thus, when the puller got ready to use the factory AM/FM STEREO radio, it wouldn't work.
Is your radio a factory AM/FM Stereo unit or is it an aftermarket piece? You want to keep that multiplex piece if your radio is indeed a factory AM/FM stereo unit and you want to maintain originality.

Thanks for the info.
Unfortunately, there was only an AM radio sitting in the dash. I thought it might have to do with the stereo, but I didn't realize you needed it for the AM/ FM radio to work.

3 radios in '70, AM, AM-FM & AM-FM stereo. Only the stereo had the extra amplifier mounted above the glove box. Pretty sure that '70 was the last year for the separate amp. In '71 it was integrated into the radio itself.

I've pulled these radios/convectors (amps) out of Olds and Chevys all the way up to '76. In fact, if anyone is interested in an AM/FM/8-track w/convector sitting inside a '73 Cutlass S near me, let me know. Was still there as of last week. Have no idea whether any or all of it works...nor, what the yard would want for it.

Just so everyone is clear, the "amplifier" used in the factory AM/FM stereo radios is not a stand-alone stereo amp like aftermarket ones. It is really a duplicate of the single-channel amp used in the non-stereo radios. What Olds did for these early factory stereo systems is to use the existing radio chassis amp for one of the two stereo channels, and add this separate amp for the second channel. The tuner outputs are split in the head unit. One side goes to the in-chassis amp for one channel (the front, if I remember) and the other goes to the external amp for the other channel (the back). You need both the AM/FM stereo head unit and this external amp for the factory stereo unit to work.
