what lubricants to use
I have read many post where wd 40 is used, are there any places that you should not use wd 40?I have used it on a mazda park brake cable and it ruined the cable, looked like the cable melted,I also once used it on a toyota throttle cable ruined that also had to replace the cable. Is it ok to use on cables and latchs on the 1973 98,and are there any lubes that should not be used?

Use lithium grease on the latches and door hinges. It is usually white or brown.
I have used WD40 on older cables without issue, but I would like to hear more input here before you use it.
Most newer cars use plastic liners in the cables and the petroleum destroys it. The older car cables are usually unlined.
Try something thicker, like wheel bearing grease. High temp protection!

I used white grease on my old Corvette's speedo cable when it started hmaking the needle hop. Squirted the grease at the speedo end of the cable and then used an electric grill to turn it. Problem solved.

As a mechanic the best lubricant I ever used was Wurth (HHS 2000) its a clear adhesive lubricant. Its great for hinges bescause it doesn't was off easily and is clear so doesn't look ugly. Works great everywhere else as well.

Have to disagree....
That reminds me of a story my cousin Chris told me when he was younger.
He was early 20's still at home and nailin his GF in his bedroom upstairs
above the family room. Well his dad had a great sense of humor and
sent his brother up there with a can of WD40 in hand telling him to
spray down his springs in his mattress because they were making too
much noise.
Needless to say his GF, whom I still know to this day, was so em"bare"assed"
she came downstairs after everyone went to bed and left.
