what do i have?
ok, i bought a 1970 cutlass it has power windows and it has a spot where it used to be a manul, now its auto. there is some supreme logos in the dash. is there a way to tell what i have by the vin? A guy after i bought it offered more then 2 times what i payed for it and asked if i kne what i had, but he wouldnt tell me the vin on the dash is 33687LAN450090

The VIN wil not tell you anything in 1970, but a factory 4 speed floor hump will. Does the old shifter area on the hump look like the pic below or does it have evidence of once having the hump? If so, it was once a 350/M20 or 350/M21 car, a fairly rare beast. There are other tell-tale signs, but the hump is probably the most obvious.

Despite the Supreme logo on the glovebox door, the 33687 VIN shows it to be a V-8 Cutlass holiday coupe (fastback body) and not a Supreme (notchback hardtop). It's not a 442 either. Have any pics?

These characters sound like they are from the cowl plate, not the dash VIN. What other info is on the cowl plate? It will indicate if the car had bucket seats or a bench. I think some W-31 cars had a bench seat AND manual shift.

There's nothing he wouldn't tell you that you can't get from the members on this board unless he happens to have paperwork for the car.

Not just W-31s. You could get the 4 spd (or even the HD 3 spd with floor shift) in just about any A-body with a bench seat. Even the 442s had a credit option to change the standard bucket seats to a bench, even with a manual trans.

for some reason it wouldnt let me put a pic in a reply. So i upload some on my profile. i only paid 1200 bucks for the car it runs and drives like a top, the guy told me the motor had been rebuilt 40,000 miles ago, the motor makes no noise what so ever sounds clean and helth and strong, shifts perfect.

So what's the VIN ? Its on the dash and on your title. The number you posted looks like the body number from the cowl tag.
Any other info about "it has a spot where it used to be a manual " ? Do you mean the hump ? Or ?
Might also be helpful to check the block/head numbers...
Heads will have a number by the #1 spark plug..like 6,7,8

Facing the front of the engine, at the top surface of the timing chain area, to the left of the oil fill tube, there is a code about 1.5" high followed by the casting number.

Not sure how accurate, but I get...
3 = Oldsmobile
36 = 8 cyl Cutlass (Supreme would be '42')
87 = Basic Hardtop Coupe
0 = 1970
I must've missed the part about the Buick motor....
Any other clues to the original manual ? Clutch pedal still there !?!
Z-bar bracket ? etc...
Sounds like it is (was) a pedestrian 350ci Cutlass hardtop when it was born....but others can probably provide more info...

OK, I'm going to take a stab at the other trim tag codes. My reference shows that it came with what Olds called Ebony Black paint and a black interior with bucket seats. Thats the 19 19 (Black on black) and the TR930 is bucket seats. The ST70 is for 1970 and d5b could be 05 = May and B = second week in may (build date) John

I think you got a really nice car for 1200.00
Re: the Cutlass Supreme "badging". It seems that a LOT of people who see the Cutlass "S" automatically assume it means Supreme. Not so. The Olds jewelry that goes with the Supreme is "CS" Cutlass Supreme.
Re: the "hardtop" question. All Cutlass models except the post cars and sedans came as "hardtops". The major difference is the quarter panels and roof lines of the cars. The Cutlass Supreme has a 'notchback' design and elegantly squared rear quarter lines - see below.

The fastback design is typical of the one you own. Note the radical sweep of the roof line as it slopes to the rear. Most commonly refered to as 'fastback'. The quarter panel also has a gentle cresent ridge over the rear wheel, giving a more stremlined racy appearance
