Never heard of a sd.

Pink slips differ from state to state.

Have you had this car for awhile, whats the problem?

Odd that a person wouldn't be familiar with his own state's vehicle titles, though.

Which, completely tangentially, brings up a pet peeve:

[rant]

Why do people from California think that everyone else will understand their own (highly atypical) state's bureaucratic vernacular?

I've lived, and registered cars, in NY, NJ, CT, ME, and VT, and in none of those states is a title called anything other than a title, and they're always a color somewhere between brown and green. Even in California, in the "modern day," a title isn't pink.

I'd heard the Beach Boys' song about a thousand times by the time I was 25, when I bought a '68 Colony Park wagon that had last been registered in CA, and several days after I was handed the title, I realized that it had a pink background, and it all finally fell into place.

Eschew obfuscation.

MDchanic, I hear ya! "Black Plates" is running a close second! Car guys get it (most anyway), and maybe people that know the movie/play "Grease".
I see a whole lot of titles in my line of work, and there a quite a few abbreviations used nowadays. Almost need one of those "texting dictionaries" to figure it all out!

I'm sorry, but as someone who grew up listening to the Beach Boys, I've always known what a "pink slip" is. I still have some from the eight years that I lived in SoCal. And the problem with black plates is that the the California DMV is now issuing repro black plates, which pretty much negates the whole benefit to having a black plate car.

Joe, my point was one of sarcasm. I knew of the "re released" black plates. I'm not sure I understand the reasoning behind it unless there is some type of surcharge not unlike our personalized plates here in MD. Old cars can pose a problem for some, in that not all states even HAVE titles for cars of "age". I've had "newer" California cars but no "Pink Slips". I have some old titles, old tags, and even some old GM stock, but no "Pinks".
By the way, still LOVE THE BEACH BOYS!!!

Not just black plates, they are also trying to recycle the blue and yellow, and yellow and blue, etc. Intriguing I suppose, give a car a "authentic" look. They are pricy though.

When I went to visit Scat Cranks in SoCal last year, I made a side visit to see the historical marker at the site of the Wilson's home in Hawthorne. It is in the middle of a residential neighborhood bordered on both sides by a private home, but it was still very cool. Just finished listening last night to Pet Sounds in Mono - the way it was intended to be heard!!!

I always thought that 'pink slip' was the insurance slip. Our ins. slips were pink! and still are. I learn something every afternoon

Ha ha. I used to think it was the carbon copy of a speeding ticket that you drive away (very slowly) with.

I have a set of YOM plates for my 72 I picked up at a flea market for $2.00! Surprising also,is they are very close to the same tag numbers that the car was registered with back then.

up here pink slip IS the insurance card. The title, or registration is also a shade of pink. Don't know why they call it Pinks all out when it should be Titles - On The Line.

I used to live in Hawthorne, a few blocks away from there. I'd frequently drive past Hawthorne High (be true to your school...).

I don't know if Louisiana still does it or not since I have been gone from there since 1979 but the license registration (not the title) used to be on pink paper.

So, you ever watch the show "Pinks"? I guess our neighbors to the north thought they were racing for insurance receipts?

in 50's 60's and early 70's CA. title was a 4x5 card that was pink.
Re-issue of the black plate was some by demand and mostly CA. wants your money.

Exactly what I was talking about - I realized what these were when I bought a '68 Colony Park for $25 off a fellow student who was going back to California. I got one of these, and saw that it was pink, and it all came together for me:
