This is the back drive bracket off of a 72. I’ve never had one this nice, usually there so Rusted that I can’t tell what was originally there. See the pictures below this bracket looks to originally been silver or galvanized I could see a little blue underneath where the boat was touching almost like the writing that came on the metal used for your window mechanisms in the door. Obviously at some point in his life somebody painted his frame black but that’s peeling off to reveal the original color. Thanks Brandon
i have an original, very low mileage, 71 4 sp in the shop, and that piece ( and others I have seen ) appear to have been silver zinc. I am sure others will chime in.
This bracket would most probably have been part of the factory's "black out" process under the car. However, They used so little paint that many things that were supposed to be painted black either were not or were only partially done. I paint mine with a color called Dark Steel (Lowe's, Home Depot, etc) and call it a day

I would say rand5204's assessment to be about as accurate as you could get. I bought a new one from the dealer a long time ago and it was simply naked steel stamping. Came in an open top GM baggie from the parts department. It wasn't coated or painted. I painted mine black along with the other back drive parts. Probably wasn't correct, but back then, I didn't worry about the color.
