Weight difference between Aluminum and iron

I thought there would be a bigger difference between the rear ends. The W-27 is 17.5 less than the Iron O type. Both rear ends were stipped bare but with bushings and cover. I have seen this come up from time to time and decided to find out. The intake is much a bigger difference. 35.4 lbs.

Al is about 1/3 the weight of iron, if the parts are the same thickness, etc. Al pumpkins for the 9" Ford (the "Dearborn" or Type F ten bolt) save about 15 lb. Remember that most of the weight is elsewhere, not in the casting of the center section.

I hear ya! Holding a 57 pound iron intake while leaning over the fender is a back breaker. A 22 pound aluminum intake is so much easier to install.
