W25 air cleaner

could anyone tell me the height of the ram air cleaner assembly from where it sits atop of the carb to the top of foam seal on 455. Thank you.

can you clarify? the assembly sits on the air cleaner base.
stock intake or aftermarket.
the assembly slopes forward to match the hood.
On a stock intake the front foam ring top is 9" from the top of the front water jacket
the rear foam top is 10.75"-11" from the top of the #7 intake runner.

The height of the OAI adapter (with the round OEM captive gasket) from carb mounting ring to top of 455 foam is 6.086 inches.

thank you very much for the reply. The pics were a big help. What I was needing was the thickness or height of entire assembly, base and lid from where it sits on carb flange to the top of foam seal on the lid. I am using different intake and carb and trying to get approximate measurements too see if the w25 repro will work or if I am going to have to go different route. I appreciate you taking the time to send pics. Is the sealing foam in your pics sitting above the fender height? If so, what would be your guess of how much above fender.

There are a number of modifications that can be made to make the adapter fit where the dimensions are tight.

If you are using common aftermarket intake and carb, you could post what you have and I can probably outline your options.

I am using edelbrock torker 1 manifold with 4150 series holley. If my measurements are close, it looks like I have 3-3/4 to 4 inches of clearance from top of carb flange to sealing ring on hood. Dont have wire mesh installed at this time, but planning on using it

I'm at the Olds Nationals in Dayton this week, and I don't have access to my records. I can reply on Monday.

The Torquer 1 is 1.75" taller than the stock Olds intake.

The Holley is the same height as the Q-Jet.

To seal this to the OAI hood you cannot use the OAI adapter on your air cleaner--it's much too tall.

You will need to buy a Chevelle Cowl Induction adapter, which fits the ID of the air cleaner and has a flange to put the sealing foam on. You'll need the taller W-31 foam.

The foam will compress 0.25" when the hood closes, so this is a good stackup.

Downsides are that the air cleaner will always be open to the hood intakes, and you will no longer see a flapper when you open the hood.

Make sure the air cleaner base has the drain holes, because you'll need that in a rainstorm to avoid water buildup around the air filter.

You'll need longer vent tubes to reach from the valve cover breathers to the air cleaner elbows. You'll need to fabricate those with soft copper tube or similar that you can bend. Paint them black when you're done with the fitting process.

another option is to heavily modify the base of the air cleaner with a drop base welded in. I run the Torker with the fully functional breather and it all fits under the hood. Lots of work but it can be done:

Well done! Great idea and nice fabrication.

Thanks! It was all done by Frank Trimble in MD who did most of the big custom projects on my 442. I honestly didn't think it would work but was pleasantly surprised. Initially I had a Holley carb on there and then upgraded to the FiTech throttle body and both work great with no issues. Also many have said the drop base is too low and will cause issues. I have about 7k hard 6,000 RPM shifting (with the Magnum 6 speed) miles on the car and have tested with and w/o the drop base & breather on the car and I don't notice any difference on the butt dyno. If there's any difference I can't tell. If I ever get it back to the track or get some rear wheel dyno #s, I'll try with and without too.

This is exactly what I had thought of doing. My only concern is I am running tall valve covers(stud girdle) and think I might have clearance issues. I've been looking for a period correct base 68-72, for a donor but people are asking the world for them. The chevelle cowl induction system may work for my situation. Just trying to not pull air from engine bay and use the OAI as intended. I may try and do both at some point and see which i prefer. Nicely done and thanks for the pics!

I removed the Torquer manifold that they put on to drag race it back in the day. The original W25 lid and foam would not work with it as stock and I wasn't about to butcher mine. I put on a W-30 intake and it works fine
