Vapor Lock

How do I solve vapor lock in my 1967 442 with a 69 455 engine? I would not like to drop the tank to run a return line for an electric fuel pump. Thought of replacing the current mechanical fuel pump with a higher performance fuel pump. Also I have gotten insulation tape to wrap the fuel line nearest the engine. Any other Ideas?

Either install an electric fuel pump in back, near the tank, or install a return line, with either a mechanical or electric fuel pump.

Are you sure it's vapor lock?

Poughkeepsie, City of Sin, eh?

Hmmm..city of Sin? Could be, but have not heard That? I believe it is vapor lock. After driving it for a while maybe 30 -45 mins. Once we stop it will not start. Turns over fine, but will not start. If I wait 10 - 20 mins it starts right up. So, I am guessing vapor lock. What else could it be. Sometimes, if I am lucky I can put the gas pedal to the floor and it starts.

Have you checked your fuel level in the carb. when this happens?
Give the accel pump a good squirt while looking down the primaries and see whether you can see two strong streams of gas shooting in?

If the carb is empty after sitting for a while, the problem is not vapor lock (though vapor lock can contribute to having a hard time filling it up by cranking).

Also, check for spark when this happens - less-then-great spark = ignition problem.

Hey...thanks for sharing the Poughkeepsie info. hadn't known we were so popular. Check out walkway over the Hudson. Something we are very proud of. Anyhow, do I check the Carb out hot or cold. I fo know if the car sits a few days, I have to crank it several times, set the choke and it starts right up. Normally, I just set the choke and it starts. Again, thanks for the Potown info and the help with my car...Carl

Been up there, but it was LONG before there was a walkway of any kind.

And it gets COLD up there at night in January.

Quite a dicey expedition, really.

Check it as soon as it is having the starting problem.

I'm guessing that the starting problem goes away when it's cold.

Yes, it goes away when it is cold. I don't drive it much in the winter. Just on nice days when there is no salt on the road.
