I've used a simple lever style compresser many times. Its a lisle brand.

Lever-style with heads on the engine (to change springs or guide seals), C-type with heads off.
If it works, I wouldn't worry about whether it seems cheap - how often do you really use one?.

I've had the puller type shown in the last two pic's for years, and works fine. I've pulled springs with heads still on the engine, by pressuring the chambers with with compressed air, through the spark plug holes. Usually need to lightly hammer the tool top, to pop the retainers loose.
