Valve cover gaskets

If it ain’t one thing it’s another after two failed attempts at installing my valve cove I think 3 rd time is a charm . Should be one of the simplest jobs to do but figment issues strike again fel pro is fastly approaching my **** list . I do blame myself for my impatience.

You can see in the one pic how far off the bolt hole alignment was , the gasket must have been walking on as I tightened it down . A little trimming and a red hot nail got things to line up better . That big hump in the gasket shows how it looks with the bolt holes lined up .

Sometimes, turning them around can help line up.

I did try that it just move the hump to the other side of the valve cover

I use weather strip contact cement and glue them to the valve cover. Install after the adhesive dries.

Had the same issue with the Felpro..switched to Victor Reinz and much better..no adhesive needed. If I were you I would get rid of the Felpro and get the Victor Reinz. You'll have to do a little massaging, but you won't have anywhere near the issues compared to the Felpro...trust me, I know.

His valve covers are not square is my guess, I had to get a NOS set of Alum valve covers in order to get a good seal, and like you no adhesive is needed, and its bone dry I also use studs so they align perfect.

Oh yea..good point. 1/4-20 set screws about 1-1/2 inches long should work perfectly.

Valve cover gaskets that are rubber with the steel core work the best and are fully reusable.

Yes, the rubber with steel core from multiple vendors including Rocket Racing, where I got mine, work quite nicely. I also bought the Edelbrock top end gasket kit. Pretty sure the valve cover gaskets are the Mr Gasket Ultra Seal. They fit the valve covers quite well and the latex coated over a cork/rubber blend puts them a step above regular cork valve cover gaskets. I first bought those regular Felpro rubber valve cover gaskets for Olds 25 years ago. They fit better then but they do become become hard and brittle over time. That set 10 years later were very hard. The last set I pulled off came off in many pieces. Too bad they stopped making the Felpro Permadry with the rigid core and sealing beads. I bought the last one Rock Auto had in stock before they were discontinued. I will definitely avoid those Felpro rubber valve cover gaskets.
