UHV Distributor History??????????????

Whats the history of the UHV Distributor.
Option?
Standard on some models?
Does it work well?
What year was it offered?
Did the factory race cars use them?

The option K66 was an option in '67, '68, & '69. The amplifier box, red coil and magnetic pickup coil in the distributor. Had a different harness without a ballast resistor. A regular coil will not work on this setup.

The UHV system was a precursor to the later HEI distributors. Same type of magnetic pickup coil and reluctor wheel in the distributor. It's an interesting example of electronics miniaturization that the same electronics that required that large amplifier box in 1967 were able to be fit into the HEI module by 1974.

On the right fender filler facing forward. Three attaching bolts and a ground strap just below the box onto one of the rad cradle bolts (the four bolts in a row). I think there are dimples to locate it.

I don't have any pics handy. Some of these other people on this site have lots of time to search the inter-web for pictorial history.

I have a UHV box which i gutted, still have the innards if anyone wants them it was very clean inside. Joe P. told me about distributor Dave. info@davessmallbodyheis.com
I sent him a points dizzy and the empty box, he converted the dist to HEI and put the module inside the box. It looks like UHV but is the more modern HEI. I also painted the coil and dist cap red as they were with the system.
From what I read they worked good when they worked but alot died and were just trashed when warranty service to replace them was performed. For the most part it seems they were not very reliable thus the introduction of the more reliable HEI. I have posted pics of the dist and box after recieving them from Dave, can post again later if needed.

K66 was available in '67, '68 and '69...'68 & '69 have the same part number for the amplifier. Slight mod in the trigger wire being shielded. Different distributors though.

The only place I see it in the '69 CSM is an illustration that was carried over from the '68 manual (I presume mistakenly). The whole section on the UHV that is in the '68 CSM is gone from the '69 CSM.
So.......

Thanks. I think that pretty well wraps it up that it was not factory offering in '69.

My Oldsmobile F-85 1964-74 Master Parts Catalogue # 743A, gives the K66 part numbers for the '67, '68 & '69 cars.

Once again, the availability of a part for an application does not mean it was used in a factory installation. Though no a common occurrence, this is a good example of it being listed for '69 because it was a dealer installation in '69. Another example off the top of my head is a passenger side rear view mirror in '67. Listed in the parts catalog, but dealer installation only.
Also another example of multiple sources needed to verify facts!
