I just bought a 71 cutlass convertible. It needs a replacement trunk lid, can I use a 70,71 or 72 or only a 71 and 72?

I know a 71 will fit but am not sure about a 70. Check the lettering on the trunk to see if it is the same. A trunk from a 4-door will also fit.

 

any deck lid from a 70 - 72 convertible or 4-door will work. There are differences in the inside stamping but fitment is not an issue. They make repos as well

In your search you can use 72 as well as 71 Supreme convertible lids, as they both have the Oldsmobile lettering across the bottom, making for less work drilling all the different holes.
I'm in the same boat with my 71 SX convertible.

 

The Supreme deck lids for 71-72 have OLDSMOBILE spelled out across in individual letters, whereas the 70 lid has a Cutlass script emblem on the lower right and a rocket emblem around the key hole.
The 4 door lids have different trim, depending upon the year and trim level.
They all interchange, as in will bolt on and line up correctly, but the emblems and edge trim are different.


And the main difference between a Supreme hardtop and Supreme convertible lid is that the hardtop lid front corners are 90º whereas the convertible lids have rounded edges. Some folks have rounded the edges on hardtop lids for use on a convertible.

1972 Cutlass 4 door lid. I don't know what trim level this one is. I have seen others that have a single flat panel across the lower edge with Oldsmobile embossed into it.

 

Kenneth - The 72 is the Towne Sedan. But, as noted the deck lids from all 70-72 more door cars will fit. The deck lid trim is a combination of CS on the deck, and fastback on the quarters. I like that trunk rocket - I have one on my car.

If the provenance of the car isn't going to be an issue, go with whatever is closest and cheapest.
