Tapping valves

Hello,I recently put a 350 olds engine in my 88 cutlass and the engine ran hot.So now my valves are tapping ,is this bad and is it fixable. Also my dad said my drive shaft is in the trans to far so its keeping the the engine from turning at its full speed and thats my reason for my engine over heating

chances are you have warped valve stems due to excessive overheating, the larger problem being galling of cylinder walls @ piston rings have lost all tension thus will not seal compression. seizeing of piston to cylinder walls will not allow the engine to rev up eventually the engine will seize up . nothing short of complete overhaul ie boring of cylinders and replacing valves will fix the problem...
