Supercharged 260

Not something you see everyday. I wonder how water injection would have worked out for him.

Good luck finding that Oldsmobile marine engine thermostat housing. I would say necessity is the mother of invention, but...

There were actually a lot of Olds motors used in marine applications and those housings (called water divider) are surprisingly common on the used market.

Initial reaction: I'd just as soon go with a naturally-aspirated 350 SBO and start at the same place that 260 is ending up with a lot less fuss.

While I cannot say that I would have done it this way, (Or on a 260!!, try 330/425) I can absolutely appreciate his tenacity to overcome the obstacles and try. We don’t have anything vested but a few minutes to view. Here is a running video.😃

Kudos to him for his creativity and tenaciousness. I kind of like the linkage spring mount on the passenger side, looks like a 4mm combo wrench.

that’s it? Why isn’t there a vid of it moving the car

its sounds super lazy to me…I won’t believe it until I see it actually move the car along faster than a 260 would

Super lazy…..kinda like sitting in front of a PlayStation lazy? 😉. Perhaps you could show us your groundbreaking performance accomplishments!…..And done so on a dime and perspiration like this guy! Super-lazy,…..really??

He’s got it idling at like 2,000 while he snaps the throttle wide open, you can see the secondary flap opening.

it barely gains RPM. It should have RPM’d to the moon. I think it’s pretty cool what he did..but after several videos, and NONE of them showing the car moving under its own power…it’s BS.

I shouldn’t have said super lazy…sorry

i meant to say an absolute 100% dog if it can’t even RPM in neutral. But if we use our imagination, im sure we can assume its really really fast, because, he said so.

like a joke, but no punchline.

Being a nearly 40 year veteran of having a series of Olds 260 motors, I was always under the ideal that virtually nothing could be done to them to obtain any added performance. Hmmmmm

Any engine can be built for improved performance, some just run into the law of diminishing returns sooner than others.

He has a done a Cadillac V8 as well. As said, it would be nice to see how it actually moves the car, which is no light weight.

The Olds 260 isn’t a powerhouse by any stretch of imagination, but they were reliable and barely adequate for the early G body cars.

The 260 Olds will also make you long for a rompin stompin 307 under the hood!

you misinterpreted what I said. I said “it” sounds lazy, not him. I also said I think it’s neat what he did.

now , go back and watch the video of it running at a high idle and him cracking the throttle wide open …it’s lazy

This project is either someone wasting time with parts on hand and goofing around, or someone who is so ego-maniacal that he thinks that, because his brain dreamed it, it will defy all physics and other peoples' experience that it will be awesome.

It takes a degree of humility to say "You know, I think I had a really bad idea here," and rethink the whole thing. I defined "out of the box" thinking to some other engineers the other week as figuring out that you don't HAVE to do a certain thing, instead of starting from the assumption you have to do it. This is like "take a 260 and get the most power from it" and realizing the question really is "take the car the 260 is in and get the most power from it any way you can."

In 1992 I had a 260 block bored .30 over for a rebuild. I still have that motor in my blue 79 Calais all these years later. It still runs great but I probably went from 105 to 108 hp. Maybe. For maximizing hp on a motor like this, perhaps a K & N air filter might have done more. But, getting the most out of a 260? That is a tough one indeed.

I always thought the GM 4.3l (262 ci.) 90° v6 had a better reputation than the Olds 260.
