Stupid question....most likely

When searching for parts for my 64 Cutlass, is it safe to assume that f85 always applies to Cutlass as well? I often see "parts fit all except f85"....does this mean Cutlass?

I feel it does but want to make certain I know what I think I know.

It depends on the part, F85 is a trim level.

Maybe referring to the base 6 cylinder (buick?) instead of the 8.

You didn't know... you asked.... someone gave you the answer.

Dumb would have been NOT asking.

Except for the obvious differences in trim parts between F85 and the higher-line Cutlass, whatever fits a Cutlass also fits an F85.

The factory parts books refer to ALL 61-72 A-body cars as F85. They will differentiate between trim and series levels by using the Fisher body style number; e.g. 4400 for 442, 4800 for Vista Cruiser, 3500/3600 for Cutlass trim levels, etc. Starting around 1973 they will refer to them simply as A or by the Fisher series/bodystyle such as AG37, AJ57 etc.

Generally when it says "fits all except F85", it means it fits big car or Toronado.

So to answer your question, yes, F85 mechanical and body parts also work on Cutlass and vice versa.

Except F85 means that the part is for a full size car.

No. "F-85" means that the part is for a mid-size (A-body/ Cutlass / F-85 / 442) car.

Thanks for the input everyone. To further the confusion, I took a gamble and bought a switch (ac/blower) for my 64 Cutlass. The box says "except f-85 and Toronado" but it appears to be identicle to my original switch. I will check and see if it fits tomorrow.

As it turns out

Well I tried to install the AC Blower switch today and found that in this case, the "all except F85 and Toronado" was spot on. It does not work. Although the electrical wires plug right in correctly, the attachment screw was in the wrong location and the switch shaft was too short.

So if anyone needs a NOS AC/Blower switch that doesn't apply to Cutlass or Toronado, let me know.

My search continues.
