If nothing up front has been replaced then it's most likely cumulative play in all the tie rod ends, ball joints, steering box, etc.

Replacing all the rod ends on my car got it from a turn of play to about a 1/2. The remaining play appears to be in the steering box. Acquiring parts now for a GC steering box upgrade.

you can tighten the box a tiny bit with the locknut ontop of the steering box- it changes the mesh between the gears inside, But read your chassis manual before attempting to tighten it though- too much and it will chew up the gears in your box.

Even with it adjusted tighter- there is still a considerable ammount of play you will see before the wheels turn- even in a new car it will have some- its just more noticeable on the old cars because they had just low required steering input and wide steering ratio. my 66 was 4 turns lock to lock!

Restoring the geometry with new springs, shocks and bushings will help also.

The box is from a 93-98 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I've seen them on Evilbay pretty cheap, check your local junk yards, I picked mine up from a friend that was parting one out.

Here is the thread which explains the conversion. Looks like everyone that has tried it is pleased with the outcome.

Make sure the couplers in the column shaft are not worn. Look at the shaft under the hood while someone else is inside exercising the 'slop'. You should be able to see where the slop is that way.
