Stainless restoration and polishing service?

I have two pieces of Stainless that I am needing to have professionally polished. For some reason I think the grain is different on it than I am use to and I can't get it right. Who are you guys using for this? I don't need any dints or dings fixed, just polished. I can ship them, they are not very big.

I've had good results with Dell Metal Polishing in Ohio. Bruce is a really good guy to work with.

Thanks guys. I will check these places out. They are not that large and actually pretty good to start with so I don't think it would kill the bank account to get them done professionally.

Eric,I have a guy here that does absolutely great work and is reasonably priced. He did the stainless on my 66 and it was flawless. Send it to me and I'll get it to him. He makes stainless look like chrome.

I've buffed a lot of stainless and have found that most of the stainless trim pieces used by GM from that era are flashed chromed. This chrome plate is only about .0002 thick but it complicates the buffing process. Chrome plating is like a very hard clear coat to prevent oxidation. To properly buff the flash chrome needs to be stripped. This can be accomplished by a quick swim in a 50/50 muratic acid/water bath. The part then needs to be thoroughly rinsed in water with baking soda added to neutralize the acid. A one pound box of soda in five gallons water is adequate. Finally just rinse the part in fresh water and it is ready to buff.

The down side side to all of this is the buffed part will look fantastic for a few years but without another flash chrome layer added, it will eventually oxidize and take on a grayish, yellowish tint. Properly flash chromed stainless with have a blueish tint and will last indefinitely.

These don't have that. Just stainless and no coating.

Eric, check out Courtesy Metal Polish by me here in Chicago. The guy does awesome work and his prices are really good. He has done all the brightwork on my 31. I have to drop some stuff off with him in the next few weeks, so if you want to send me your stuff, I can bring it in with mine. Let me know.
