Two Hurst Olds shouldn't be sitting in a junk yard row.

 

Looks like a G body gold mine.

 

I remember selling the '83 and '84 H/O. The public didn't know they existed---poorly marketed. And the ones we did sell were in the service lane for the shifters jamming.

 

I remember going to the dealer and looking at these cars. My friends and I made jokes about them. They weren't fast and had the Lightning Rods. We had a field day with that. My 350 Chevelle would tear one up at the time. And it was S L O W.

 

In 1983 our dealership was a high-volume Olds dealer and we also had a smaller showroom that sold VW products. Well The VW GTI was just introduced as was the "new" Hurst Olds. I made a challenge to the VW sales manager to see what was quicker stoplight to stoplight---a GTI or the '83 H/O. We lined up at the intersection right next to the showroom for all to see. Let's just say I had to buy lunch!!!

 

That's just damned embarrassing.

These cars didn't garner much respect in the day. They looked nice but were no stoplight chargers. And then to throw in the silly shifter, well it was good for a laugh. Now, those who like them like them. To each his own. Choked 307 anyone? Blat!

 

When those GTI's came out we had a field day at the body shop. They were fast with too much torque steer. When you tromped it, it would head straight for the sidewalk. They took a little of the oomph out of them for '84. Much less mess to clean up.

 

Lol I had a couple 83-84 GTIs and few newer ones as well....no more vws for me tho the one I bought new had all the same issues my old 100k examples had, water leaks, trim falling off, mediocre quality, and poor dealer support and attitude....At the time tho I did enjoy the early early GTIs and GLIs as well....now I like HOs !!!

 

Well VW and lightning rods put me to sleep. sorry.

 

I always lusted after the '83 H/O. Love the paint on the '83 better than the '84, but like the '84 grille better. Never cared for the Lightning Rod shifter, though. I always would have preferred the Hurst Dual Gate myself...or a friggin' 4 speed manual! Is it just me, or does the '83 Hurst/Olds paint scheme remind anyone else of the Batmobile from the 1960's TV series?

 

I guess that detective lady on Motive will have a parts supply for her Hurst ride.
