RIP James Garner

1970 Baja 1000
According to some reports he was an hour ahead of his class when he had a flat. An oil leak developed and he stoped to add oil. Unfortunately he neglected to tie down the flat in the trunk and it destoyed his spare oil cans. He waited 90 mins for his crew and still finished second.
Supposed to have had the 410 Olds aluminum engine.
Later found and restored. http://www.hotrod.com/featuredvehicl...2/viewall.html

Not only was he a big "Olds Guy", but I loved his Firebird watching Rockford Files as a kid! He did most of his stunt driving himself on the show...he was great at driving full speed backwards, then spinning that firebird around on a dime, alluding the bad guys every time!

He had a nice combination of strong gentleman and comedic talent in his roles. I always liked him, may he rest in peace.

That move, of driving backwards and spinning on a dime is officially know as a "Jim Rockford" R.I.P. James Garner.

Lots of great memories. He will be missed. Don't forget he also drove the 1977 Delta 88 Pace Car at the race.

James Garner was a true class act.

He met his (future) wife at a function, they went out to dinner every night for the next week, he proposed after one week, she accepted, and they stayed married all these years.

R.I.P. Rockford.

Garner was a gentleman & the persona of cool in his day. Today's male actors could learn a lot about life & acting from a man like James Garner.

Loved him in the 1966 open wheel racing movie titled "Grand Prix".

A very nice write up about the car racing related life of Jim here

When Parnelli Jones refers to you as a "man's man" you know that you have arrived.

RIP James.
