Rim ID and cool tire

I love this old school fat tire. If anybody has some info please chime in. The rim is what looks like an SSI with some stamps I included in the photo.

Not familiar with Auto Flite tires but zooming in shows it's a J60-14. Big *** tire! Also appears to have been recapped. Meant for one thing- dragstrip traction short of using slicks!

Check the bolt circle diameter. 4.75 indicates a GM wheel, and all but Pontiac used this Magnum 500 style. 4.5 would be for a Ford, Mopar or AMC. All used some version of it.

J-60, wow! Didn’t know that size existed. A bit narrower than L-60, and wider than G-60.

if I'm reading this right, they would be a 255/60-14 in modern size.

I couldn't find any reference to that brand tire. That is a bias ply tire, however doubt you'll ever find an oddball J60 tire in this day and age especially in a 14" wheel. Mickey Thompson (Sportsman)and Coker (Pro-Trac) are the 2 most popular brands for bias ply's.

Interesting, thanks for the replies. When I bought my car it had this rim and tire on. The history of my car is not known to me. With the low miles, people asked and I wonder also, if a lot of those miles came 1/4 mi at a time? This tire just adds to the mystery.

Those type of tires were very common on cars in general back then. Doesn't necessarily mean the car was on the track.

True, but going by the size and looking like it was recapped, it's a good possibility. Retread rubber compounds tended to be stickier than virgin tires and done right they'd last as long. And racers knew that.

Course back then getting 20k miles out of a set of tires was exceptional.

I have run retreads on a few vehicles. Never had one fail, in spite of all the gators you see on interstates. Time was any mid-size town had one or more retreading shops. Bandag is still cranking them out.

Most likely the original wheel for your car. Check the stampings on the other 4 wheels on your car and I wouldn't be surprised if they are exactly the same.

The rest of the wheels are steel, this was only SS1 on the car.

Sorry about missing the steel wheels. I glanced at the picture and saw your SSI up against the other front wheel of the car and thought they were all SSI wheels without looking at the rear.

12A = a build date of the first week of December 1969. The date on your spare tire is consistent with your build date. The dates may seem close but it appears things may have happened that was as I have the same thing with my '69 4-4-2. It was built in the third week of May 1969 (05C) and the SSI wheels on it, all original to the car, are all dated May 16, 1969.
