Restoring old mirrors

I just got an old day night mirror, you know the ones with the beveled glass.
I was going to send it to http://www.historicinteriors.com/Ant...toMirrors.html

for resilvering.

However, the front of the glass has some scratches, and Tim at the above place said that he does not polish out scratches. He does not recommend it because it can create distorted images.
I have a friend in Bermuda who has a glass shop and he has equipment that can polish the whole surface evenly, so I am taking the glass home to see if he can fix the front, before I get it resilvered.

I will keep you up to date with progress.

Hi Peter;
Wow - an Olds in Bermuda!
I did 2 military tours in "Bermadoo" at the Canuck base at Daniel's Head in the 70s/80s. It was awesome!
What is the history on your car as most vehicles were small british/asian types.
Thanks
Derek

Update on the mirror - my mate in Bermuda told me that they no longer have the equipment to polish glass, so will not be able to remove the scratches from the front of the mirror.
I found a place in Woonsocket RI that may be able to do it, or even make new beveled glass. It is about an hour drive from Newport, but I am going up there tomorrow since it seems there would be interest in this.

Hey Derek: unfortunately my car is in Rhode Island, so I only get to see it a few times a year.
I am glad you had a good time in Bermuda!

Peter - thanks for the come back.
The vendors are repopping rear view mirrors(approx $69) - good quality!
Fusick is up by CT/RI I believe.
Regards
Derek

Unfortunately all the new mirrors are not day/night beveled. They are straight glass and do not function well at night.

I struck out this morning and cannot find any place that will polish out scratches from the front of the mirror.

I was able to find a replacement that has no scratches, and am sending it out to Historic Interiors for re-silvering.
