removing old wax

What is the best way to remove old, dried up paste wax from your car? Years ago, we used to just scrub at it with a toothbrush, but I would rather not risk damaging the paint.

I use a toothpick around emblems and a popsicle stick for larger areas I use a water soaked popsicle stick to soften it up a little for a scraper on larger areas.

The old wax that I found is in the hood vents (back by the windshield).

I use a toothbrush, or something similar like detailing brushes. I try not to let it dry and sit for a long period of time.
