Hi I'm hoping I can get info for trying to register a 1950 REO tractor trailer truck .the person who has it bought it from another guy ,there is no title or plates ? He will write a bill of sale to me. Does anyone know if there is any way I can get this truck registered ?

Probably not there on the left coast, but I think Alabama can do bill of sale title you would then transfer. There's attorneys who do this.

You need to check with the state you live in , see what the laws are for abandoned or lost title vehicles etc..Each state is a bit different. Just call your local DMV.

I think Georgia also does it that way as well. I recently looked this up for Ohio. The seller needs to go through their DMV to get a title to start the process.

Unless you're going to strip it for parts, like others have said, don't buy without a title. You can eventually get it straightened out, but time and money are gonna be required.

in mass many older vehicles did not require a title at one time.

You need to get w your RMV to see whats needed to get a title

I bought an out of state car from a no title state and needed a copy of a former reg to title it in mass

I had an old bike given to me and i gave it to my buddy, he acquired a title by following the RMV procedure in mass (not sure what that entailed but he got it.)

A number of states don't issue titles for vehicles over a certain number of years old. That's just the way their laws work. I know GA is one. There are also title companies like Broadway Title who will legally run the paperwork through one of those states on older vehicles like this, for a fee.

I also live in Cal. I can tell you the Cal DMV will give you problems. I bought a VC from New Hamp, and there you only need a bill of sale and registration, if the car is like 25 years old. But Cal wants a title.I finally had to take out a bond , to get it registered.

It is not as easy in Alabama any longer. You used to be able to bring a bill of sale only on an antique vehicle and get it registered. Now they require a copy of the previous registration (along with bill of sale from that owner) since there are no titles here for cars over 25 years old.

That's exactly what the California DMV told me they need the title from the previous owner with a bill of sale since the current owner only has bill of sale for me and then the current owner needs a title with a bill of sale to me.

I think it was a percent of the selling price? The car I bought was under 10 K , and this was some years ago, and my neighbor was a insurance agent, and I think he got me a deal.I'm thinking it was under $200, it was not the money as much as the problem dealing with the DMV. I think I went there about 4 times, and you know how hard it is to go to the Cal DMV. I even had proof that New Hamp did not issue a title on cars over 25 years, and showing them that made no difference to them. Cal DMV think they write all the rules, and every state should listen to them. Also I had to take the car and they looked it over, more than one time.

My son bought an untitled car several years ago. I was able to get a title by putting a lien on it and filing for a title that way. I will say you have to have all your ducks in a row when you start this process. Once you start filing with the dmv the clock starts ticking and the penalties start building the longer it takes the more you pay. They require a vin verification from a peace officer. I had to send a letter to the last owner notifying them of the lien sale, with a form they needed to sign and send back to release their interest. I know their is more to it, alot of it depends on how helpful the clerk at the dmv is. It was a total PITA and I wouldn't do it again unless it was a deal of the century thing.
good luck

My Son-in-law had to get a titles to sell several of his grandfathers cars. No idea where he put the titles. It was a simple form and I think $30. Made selling the cars very easy. This is in MD. Tell the owner to get a replacement title it is so much easier for him, otherwise walk away. My .02

Here in GA you don’t need a title for anything over 25 years old. I’ve been tinkering with classic cars most of my adult life and I think I’ve had one title. A bill of sale on a napkin works just fine.

And this is why old cars go missing alot.
It is do dam easy to re-title older cars/change ownership. It is one thing if it is something that isn't worth much. but with the values of many older vehicles, Lack of titles, and the half @$$ed required paperwork to re-title. Should have died a few decades ago.
Ya, dealing with the RMV sucks, but I would rather that than, having another vehicle I spent time, sweet, and funds on, go missing, and get re-titled , now tagged in a new owners name. . It happens more than people want to admit.
