Rebuilt 69' 350 with 72' Heads and 76' Heads???

Hey fellows, a lil angry this morning. I had my 69' 350 rocket rebuilt several months ago. Definitely regret the mechanic used.... But after researching everything I realized that on my drive side the heads are from a 72' which are the 7a with 64cc. The passenger side has 73'-76' heads which are number 8 and 79cc. Highly pissed that I have mismatched heads on a 1969 block. As the passenger side leaks oil where the intake meets the heads. Inputs are welcomed as to what you guys think about this setup. I have an intake for a 69 on there and now I'm wondering if this is the cause for the leaks

The intake is not the cause of the leaks, but the mismatched heads would concern me. What happened to your originals? If you can get them back from him I would, and if not I would be looking for some #5 heads for a rebuild. But that's just me.

Either way I would at the very least want the same heads on both sides of the engine. Not only do you have different compression ratios, but the flow characteristics are different as well. That engine must not be much of a happy camper right now.

Oh man that sucks, I have seen similar disasters on Pontiac engines where someone put 455 low compression heads on a 350 with no idea about the huge variance in chamber sizes. For example a 68 350 advertised at 9.2 (less actual) has a about a 78-80 cc chamber and this poor motor had some 114+ cc heads on it .. Yikes. Man, chew their *** and find your 5's. Might as well use this as an opportunity for big valves and a pocket port. If you got that real big cast dish piston the rebuilders use maybe you can get some #4 330 heads instead to get back over 9:1 ?

What do you think the leak could be from then? We originally went with the valley pan gasket and it leaked, then tried the Fel Pro two piece gasket and still the same issue, someone suggested my intake was torqued too much when it was put on and may have warped it because the intake bolts were extremely tight. And I can forget the heads I had...they "supposedly" went in with the core charge. I've looked for #5 and can't find them anywhere

I just use a bead of RTV along the front and rear under the intake and don't use the gaskets. That seems to work best for that.

Yeah I have RTV on the front and back... I was referring to the sides of the intake where it meets the heads. The left side leaks and oils comes out after idling

Are you sure it's not leaking from the valve covers? There isn't any pressure (ok, some crank case pressure, but it still shouldn't do anything) under there to push oil up.

No its not leaking from there because you can see the heads meeting the intake. It leaks where they meet. Valve covers sit above all this

Did the fellow who put mis-matched heads on an engine have any interaction with the area leaking?

Honestly, after finding many leaks in numerous places, front of the intake, back of the intake, around the oil pan, after charging me over %20 for all parts I purchased through him, I made a decision to not go back to him to ask anything. The last thing I wanted was him touching the car again.

Sorry you had this happen, I wouldn't take the car back to him but I sure as hell would be having a discussion him. As for the leaks recheck the valve covers I had the same problem thought it was the heads, re torqued the valve covers and leak gone. Keep us posted

Yea the leak is definitely coming in between where the heads meets the intake and not where the valve cover meets the heads. You can see it bubble right in between the heads and intake after it sits and idles

Sux about the heads. If they used the metal turkey tray, they may not have gotten the bosses in the holes.
