Rear view mirror restoration

I have a rear view mirror with the map light that I had to remove the gray plastic/rubber part that holds the glass from the mirror body. It looks like the body was heated then pressed onto the plastic to form a melted bond.
Has anyone done this type of bonding? Or do I have to find a glue to put it back together.
I have a heat gun, was thinking that if I just heat the edges and press it back on it should be the same as it was. The body is stainless steel.

You might try contacting oldspackrat - He restores these.
