rear speaker recommendations

I need to get a pair of 6 x 9s for my '68 442. I was wondering if anyone could recommend some to me. I do not want to cut through the package tray and have the frame set on top, so I'm looking for some that will actually "fit" properly underneath. On some, it looks as if the tweeter is seriously raised on it and would not mount on the underside of the rear tray without either poking through the package tray or some kind of modification.

Thanks.

What are you going to drive them with? If you're keeping the stock radio, find a pair of factory cores and have them reconed; several places do it. It will then sound like it should, though it won't have much high-frequency response.

If you're updating the sound system, a lot of 6x9 come with a spacer ring (or did, who knows what they're peddling now) to create clearance for raised tweeters. Or you could just buy a pair of 6x9 boxes and set them in the seat.

www.crutchfield.com has a great selection of aftermarket speakers, but their fit chart does not have 1968 Oldsmobile. Just surf around in the 6x9 speakers and you may find something that will fit.

Well, I have a stock radio, but I've had the inside upgraded to stereo. It's also pumping out more watts than the original speakers can handle, so I can't go that route.

Yeah, I checked out Crutchfield. I suppose I can give them a ring and talk to someone there. Otherwise, without a seeing the speakers in person, there's no way I'll be able to know if it'll fit or not.

Crutchfield is a good company to do business with. Really good customer service. Watch for their sales because they have some very good deals.

Pretty much any 6x9" will work. If the tweeter sticks up too much you can always use a spacer. That way you can go with the speakers that sounds the best.

Here's an example of a spacer, you could always make one yourself too.
