Radio Issues
Radio Issues
My new restore also has radio issues. While looking at it today I realized there was no antenna. Couldn't remember where it was originally. Anyone know?
Continued Loki g and found with the new interior they didn't have any speaker grilles or opening on the back deck, couldn't find any up front either. Maybe I know why the radio isn't working now...

My folks 1970 delta had an "innovative" windshield antenna. It had weak reception too. My '69 has a fender mounted antenna. If you don't see a mounting hole on the fender, then you should see two fine wires in the center of your windshield. If not, then the glass has probably been replaced. You can buy a hidden antenna kit for about $20 on amazon.
Yep, antenna is in the windshield (assuming it's a 70-72 Cutlass). It works well for stations with a good signal but is not as efficient as a 30" mast antenna so distant stations won't come in as well.
As for the speakers, the rear package tray has openings (well, one for sure) in the metal under the cardboard(?). Original boards were perforated for the sound to come through and most of us back in the day cut holes through and installed speakers with grilles on the top.
As for up front, the factory setup was a single speaker in the center of the dash. Worked great for AM mono but horrible for anything else.
There are a few options for front speakers, some better than others and some easier than others.
1) Replacement dash speaker with two 4" speakers. http://www.casmfg.com/Speaker%20Options.htm
2) Kick panel speakers (simple and sounds good). This is what I have in my car but instead of cutting the originals I got aftermarket kick panels with speaker pods from Custom Auto Sound (http://www.casmfg.com/Chevelle_Kickpanels.htm).
3) Door mounted speakers. I saw one neat setup where a hole was cut in the front lower part of the door and round speakers mounted in the door, then the door carpet backing was perforated so the sound came through but the speaker was invisible.
You can get fairly creative with stereo installation.
