But, you doesn't have to call him "Mr. Johnson!"
I believe RJ is the assembly plant, actually. Someone must know.
7042xxx carb is for 1972 model year.
the 2931 indicates it was "born" on day 293 of 1971, or about Oct. 20th.
Fairly early production.
I figure the NC is another assembly plant code.

RJ and NC are the bin numbers.
You can see them listed in the Assembly Manual.
Like the two-letter tags on springs and shocks, they told the guys on the line which parts to pick without having to look at long numbers.

I've heard them referred to as the "broadcast code". I see these letters on initial production carbs but they seem to be missing on "service replacement" carbs with the same part number. Also, service replacement carbs will have a date code sometimes years later after the model year indicated in the carb number.

PS: The 2931 number is the julian date code for your 1972 carb. The carb was manufactured on the 293rd day of 1971, or about October 20, 1971. And the NC is the broadcast code for that 1972 carburetor.
PS again: If you look on the base of the 1968 carburetor, on the narrow flat vertical surface towards the rear on the driver side, you should see a 4 digit code - it's the julian date for that carburetor. The '68 carbs seem to have that date code; some of the '69 729251 RJ carbs don't seem to have any date code.

Thanks guys. I have never taken the time to learn the Julian date system, but I guess I need to for my 72.
I need to post my body tag so y'all can help me out with which one of my 72 carbs to use. not that it matters much, but why not be at least close if I can be.
