Q4 Cutaway
I bought my 1991 Cutlass Calais with the Quad 4 motor new, ordered it 12/1990. Yeah, it was noisy and I can see how others complained about it but I liked the noise it made. By 1991 the head gasket issues were in the rear view mirror. I put 113,000 miles on it the first 3 years I owned it. The weak link in the chain turned out to be the (automatic) transmission; that motor never gave me any problems. By the time we sold it, the odometer read about 183,000. A few years later the guy who bought it from us offered to give it back to us for free, but I passed. It had 252,000 miles on it without a rebuilt. Not bad. At 160hp in a small light car that had the FE-3 suspension, it was a decent driver with decent power. Not as exciting as the HO Quad 4 but good enough.
Around 92 I was lucky enough to watch a GM training video on vhs about the new Quad4. The video wasa few years old and was showing the prototype with headers and other things that didn’t make production. Was always a V8 guy but that video gained my respect.for small engines.

Never forget the first time seeing a Q4 under the hood, saw that tuned intake and immediately knew this was something special. I drove my MIL's '92 Grand Am w/ a Q4 to Cedar Point and back one day w/ 4 of us in the car. Was impressed with it's guts in traffic and passing abilities on the road. A couple of buddies had Q4 Calais, one w/ a 5-spd that was pretty dang quick, and the other was an auto. The bud w/ the auto and I in my '68 S drove our cars to Talladega in Petty's last year, nearly got flooded in the rain. One time we lined them up (drivers only) and were neck-and-neck to 100 multiple times, no clear winner. Great little motor those Quad-4s.

I worked at OLDS dealer ship early 1990's never saw that.. Parts Dept. had pallets of the q4 warranty heads... went 2 scrap mostly
He still has the custom DRAGSTER CHASIS designed to run the QUAD 4 in
NHRA would not let them run it because of some BS weight rule SO THAT was never built.. Still on table JIG from then WoW Time Bomb 87
Not sure when the video was made but he had another video of a Vette at the training grounds that was getting tore up. They were crashing it into a large pile of gravel and driving it like it was stolen. He gave us some training material I’ll look to see if it has a date.
