Power Steering on 67 cutlass
Power Steering on 67 cutlass
Had a high pressure line go bad so replaced it no problem. Pump has fluid, but there is an off and on whining noise and no power steering. Looks like fluid is getting to the steering box. Pump is bad? Heard this is a hard to find part to replace. Thoughts?
If the pump was working before you replaced the hose, chances are you have air in the system. You need to take the load off the wheels and with the engine running turn the steering from lock to lock.
Sorry dont know where to get a pump, I would not give up on yours so quick. They take persistence to bleed the air. Does the pump smell burnt? Its a nasty order you cant miss. Takes quite a lot of bleeding, to get the air out. Look in the pump, after turning the wheel back and forth. If the fluid is foaming, there is air in the system. Would hate, for you to buy a new one, and find out, you did not bleed enough, Did I tell you, it takes a LOOONG time to get the air out?
I advise reusing the original pressure valve if you get a parts store reman. They're not always correct.
I've never had much trouble getting the air out. Jack the front up, and work it lock to lock, holding it BRIEFLY on the stops each direction.

Not the same issue, but close. I put a Jeep Grand Cherokee power steering box on my '67 and it took days to get all the air out of the system. Turn the wheel lock to lock a few times and find the fluid completely aerated. Let it sit for a while until the fluid was clear, and repeat until the fluid stayed clear. As mentioned above, "it takes a LOOONG time to get the air out?"
