A Plethora of Problems
A Plethora of Problems
Hi All,
Many of you have suffered and helped me find a car over the months.
I've been looking for just the right fit and I think/thought I found it.
A 1970 442 beauty with no rust, new int and a great AC.
Today I went to take a fun ride with my wife and I start hearing things I have never heard. First a fluttering sound coming from under the gear shifter when I take my foot off the gas and next a ticking sound when braking.
When I get home I find a small amount of oil on top of the intake manifold inbetween where it has a 1 and a 3. It is in a area that has a metal loop bolted on it.
I also check my fluids on a reg basis since I has a recent brake leak problem. So I wanted to check them after I got back from the ride. Trans fine, the oil is fine, but I notice something on the dipstick. I seems like I have some type of black trash in the oil. I put it in/out several times and I get the same trash.
I have had the car almost 2 months and have not changed the oil. Prev owner said he just did it.
This car runs great and leaks nothing underneath. Besides idling low when a/c on, and a small gas smell it is great.
Please help/advise/hold my hand.

I'll take a stab at a couple of your issues.
* The flutter sounds a lot like you might have an exhaust leak.
* Oil on top of the intake manifold - likely you have a failed VC gasket in that area
* Brake leak? From where? Get it fixed! Getting the car going is easy - getting it stopped is way more important.
* CHANGE THE OIL! and filter. Also do a grease job while you're at it. There are 11 grease fittings. Anyone tells me the oils just been changed and it shows black trash in the oil? Somethings wrong. What exactly do you mean by black trash???
* Far as the low idle with AC, you should have a slow idle dashpot that cuts in with the AC. May not be adjusted properly. Check your 70 CSM for specs - should be around .060 from dash pot to throttle tab when dash pot is fully compressed

Ok, the brake problem was fixed a while back.
It is an automatic.
Oil will be changed tomorrow.
I will have to take it to someone for the valve cover gasket, A/C probs, exhaust leak and brake check.
Thanks.

I had what I thought was oil on my intake manifold and it turned out to be gas leaking from the carb linkage. It looked just like oil, very dark. I happened to be tweaking the idle and saw the carb drip gas when I manually accellerated the engine. It would puddle up in the valley of the intake and I'm sure as it evaporated it turned even darker.
I realize this. It's a Holley carb and the leak is where the linkage passes through the carb. I'm sure it's worn. I'm in the process of finding a suitable Q-Jet
Ally,
You may be onto the right track. I wiped it up so fast that I just assumed it was oil.
I bet that is what it is due to the gas smell I'm having. The smell is definetly coming from the from of the car. I'm having to take it to someone to check out.
