Pleasant discovery

I bought my car 6 months ago and, with exception of a repaint a while ago, it's pretty much original unrestored - EXACTLY what I wanted. I was disappointed that it had W-30 decals applied instead of the 'correct', thin, 3-stripe side stripes the non-W cars got in '71. Shortly after I bought it I could tell there were some type of stripes UNDER the W-30 decal stripes but it appeared to be the '70-style 2-stripe so I figured incorrect is incorrect so I left the W stripes there. Well today, out of boredom, I decided to inconspicuously pull back the existing stripes and LO and Behold, underneath is the correct, thin 3-stripe, PAINTED on!!!! I'm SOOOO psyched!! After peeling all the W-30 stripes off and removing the adhesive it looks great! Now I just have to have the wide center stripe painted down the hood which I plan to do at the end of the month. Sorry, but I had to share my excitement with someone and who better than my Olds brethren!

Thanks guys. The 'before' can be seen next to my name. Once I get the correct hood stripe, I'll take some 'after' pics. I could have sworn the hood stripe info was in my Assembly manual but it shows every stripe BUT the non-OAI stripe. Maybe it was here I saw the diagram. I'll have to search for it.

Thanks! I did a search here and found all the info and measurements that someone posted from a White '71 Survivor Convertible with great pictures (from Texas I think). My correct, non-OAI center hood stripe will be done the weekend after next hopefully.

Yeah, I got lucky. I have to assume they have not been on there long as they came off in one piece and were very soft and plyable. I didn't even need a heat gun. Just parked in the sun for about 30 minutes.

Mike, the car looks great!

Too bad someone spoiled it by standing in front of the side shot . I really like the color on your car. Here are some other pics of similar cars, and an ad I got out of Muscle Cars. I guess I'm more used to seeing the W29 appearance stripes on the hood than the Y73.

Nice job! That car is looking good.

I grew fond of the Y73 stripes after finding a parts car and storing it a few years. It looked just like Allens....except rusty

Really don't see those stripes as often as the other version.

Thanks everybody, I appreciate the kind words (even about my retro Nikes). Thanks 'Texas442' for the photos and dimensions of the White 'vert survivor. The great results were due to the info you provided!
