Just stumbled across this on line. Not a comprehensive treatment of the subject but an excellent resource for the beginner. Covers how parts of the engine work (oil system, bearings, etc) as well as diagnosis prior to rebuilding.

Did you figure out that it's a BBO in the photo (though obviously from a full size, likely a 425).
