Panel replacement ??

Panel replacement ??

Anybody ever replace the panel directly behind the rear window on a 1970 holiday coupe, what is it called and was it a big job to do ?? thanks Greg

I did that on my '70 Supreme back in the 80s due to rust under the vinyl top. I welded in an entire section from a donor car. Removed the rear glass, cut out the entire panel and the window channel, and welded the replacement panel in.

Not terribly difficult to do, if you have the tools to cut and weld. Was a lot harder making one from scratch, I did one for a 66 Lemans, when they weren't reproduced.

it is called a tulip panel
I replaced mine on my 67
it wasn't to bad

Research before you do any cutting

Look up from inside trunk for spot welds where that panel meets the quarter panels. There may be some overlap that you can reuse to spot weld the new panel to. Drill out the existing spot welds. You may not get the gutter part that goes across under the trunk lid ( weather strip for trunk mounts to it) with the new panel so may need to reuse the existing one. May be spot welds there too.
