Paint in the old days

I had my 72 Biscayne painted by Eral, circa 1978.
I did all the prep. Delivered it to them no trim in primer.
They didn't do the jambs. The paint job was decent, especially for a high school student that made $60/week.
I cut the jambs with a spray bomb.
$30 worth every penny.

Family had a '68 Opel Kadett Rallye 4 speed painted by Earl Scheib in 1971. It was a color change and two-tone with stripes for $39.95. It was presentable.
Paintarama was in town also, they painted our '61 Beetle for $19.95!

Quick bath, maybe scotch pad it, blow and go..I worked at a car lot as a lot boy in 1974, we got a few of those Earl jobs in as trade ins.. My job was to clean them up and make them look better to sell..lol.. I think the used an old enamel as cheap as they could, rough job..

Some people on this post say not bad & others are bad, sounds like yours was one of the bad ones ! I don't know how they could of painted a car for that price, the materials were more then that.

Work quality did and does vary widely between franchise locations. There is a Maaco in town that will do very nice work at reasonable prices. Did a small car about 2 years ago for $8k and it was quite nice.
If I were having an econo job done I'd expect just that and prep everything myself within reason
