Paint code question

Looking for a paint code for my car and to no surprise, sticker too faded to read...so my question is how is my 66 cutlass saffron yellow, when that color isn't a option in 66. It's available in 67 but not 66...not a repaint either. Thanks for any help.

Paint code missing? Should be a letter. 2 is for a black convertible top. Saffron is not listed for '66, as you pointed out.

interesting that Oldsmobile didn't offer a "yellow" for 1966

with no paint code indicated - I'd "ASSUME" it was a "special order paint" spec'd car

for '66 paint code "Y" was an available yellow on Buick "cream", Chevrolet "lemonwood yellow" & Pontiac "candlelight cream" - Corvette also had paint code "984" - "sunfire yellow"

as a starting point, I'd check these paint chips/samples against your car's door jambs to see if any look close .....

"Y" was "saffron" for 1965 (WA-3313) & a STANDARD color for OLDS
"Y" was modified for 1966 (WA-3494) & NOT STANDARD for OLDS
"Y" returned to "saffron" for 1967 (WA-3313) & again a STANDARD color for OLDS

here are a couple 1966 paint code "Y" cars in different lighting - looks like a possible match on my computer screen (don't know if any of these are original paint) the GTO & wagon are promising?

That is a unique piece of information on your car. Safron Yellow was available in 65 and 67 but not 66. Your car has no paint code. A previous ownor may have liked that color. Any written or verbal history on your car. Not many 66 convertibles around and you have one with a special paint color. Thats got to be neat. Have fun.

I can't comment on the originality of this car's paint or not, but I can verify that Olds had RPO codes and prices for special paint, so it is certainly possible that the car was ordered and built like this.

RPO Y62 was Special Paint - Charge (typically used for non-GM colors).
RPO Y63 was Special Paint - No Charge (typically other GM colors not standard for Olds).
RPO Y66 was Two Tone Special Paint.
RPO Y69 was Special Firemist Paint.

Look by the door hinges on the inside of the doors, or lift up the carpet by the door sill is, to see if it is the same color.

It is the stock color. I took everything apart to verify that it wasn't a repaint. What' even more wierd is there is another 66 convertible that' identical to mine for sale on the other side of the state. Same color exterior and interior.

I'm inclined to think that you have a special order paint on your car.

I used to own a '67 442 that was special order paint - took a while to figure it out, but it was "emerald green metallic" a Toronado ONLY color at OLDS

I didn't realize there were RPO codes for special order paint options. The owner of Phillips Oldsmobile in VA Beach told me the special order paint option was $50.00 his cost in 1970.
