Whats up with all the other olds site? I don't want spamming/pimping my site for no reason, but I'll make sure mine stays up running ;-)

They have had some sort of Trojan or other virus that they evidently can't kill. Been that way for at least a month.

Between the spotty performance and the attitude of one of the owners, I said the hell with it several weeks ago. Site content has really gone downhill too- little to no real technical info being presented, lot of junior high school type arguing. I figured my Olds contributions would be better shared and appreciated elsewhere.

Plus it just burned me up when the attitude in question would challenge every damn thing I posted. When I have zone and factory level correspondence in hand, dated and referenced to phone conversations, I don't think you're gonna get much closer to fact than that.

Unfortunately, this kind of thing can hit any site, and half the time they don't even know about it for awhile. Worst one, is when some bogus anti virus company supposedly offers you a free scan, and already downloaded a virus, that requires you to buy their software to get rid of it. These are really bad, as basically locks your computer from doing anything but going to their site. I clone my computers hard drive to another one weekly, and worst that can happen when swapping to the back up, is losing a weeks worth of information. Had to do this more than once, and immediately overwrite the infected hard drive.

It's going on about a week now that it's completely down I think. I check it every day, just keep getting that database error. I've tried to get in touch with John a couple ways, all the e-mails bounce. I'm a bit sentimental about Oldspower, I met some cool guys through there and also got lots of useful information for my motor swap. Hopefully they can get it back up and running.

Maybe I'm wrong but to me it just seemed to focus heavily on G-body cars... Not having one myself I quickly lost interest in the site. Might be handy for owners of those cars though...

From digging around, you can still access the index page of the forum here: http://www.oldspower.com/vb/

But as you poke around you will see that the database either got completely removed or just jacked up. The admin should be able to log in and see what/if any information is salvageable. It just shows the importance of packing up the databases every week or so. I hope the guys here do. I would be lost without some of the old threads.

Those were some of my issues, too. I know I can be a know-it-all PITA, but I can also listen to another point of view and agree to disagree, but everything I posted got challenged by guys who have never done anything but surf the net. Would "One of the owners" be Mike?? I had my run-ins with both him and John. Mike is very big on "Do what I say, not as I do". Very condescending and patronizing. Most of the guys whose opinion I respect are either on ROP or here. It came to a head with the "355 build cost" thread. Guys popping off with "you don't need this, you don't need that, yopu can get that used for WAY less..." So I asked them to delete me and my posts, which they did.

The tech advice on Olds Power was a bit lacking and sometimes downright wrong. Not to say all of it was but it was scary at times. I'm also not a big G body guy but I appreciate all Oldsmobiles.

About a month ago every time I went to the site my anti virus software would go off blocking part of the site. That cleared up not to long ago but now it's down hard. I heard they were trying to clean it up but I guess it failed

As mentioned earlier, if the site did get infected, you should be grateful you're denied access to it, until it's properly repaired. If your computer caught the infection, probably wouldn't be posting here, or any other site for awhile. Probably be lot's of loud words being screamed aroung your house though. Not to mention the hassle and money needing to be spent fixing your own computer.

It does get tiring that a post based on good evidence and experience gets criticized by five keyboard terrorists. OTOH, I can enjoy a good discussion with some real facts and experience involved, but where disagreement persists. Some day Captjim and I will meet and he can discuss with me how my Comp cam has too much duration and not enough lift, lol.

This would be a dull hobby if there was only one way to do things! LOL Tell you what, we get a case of beer, and swap your cam into my engine and mine into yours then we race!!

I get along with John fairly well. Draw your own conclusion.

I asked them to erase any trace I had ever been there too, but I looked about a month ago and they hadn't. They did, apparently, disable my log-in credentials.

It's telling that people who had been there since almost the beginning (2002 for me) have bailed like rats off a sinking ship. I wish them the best, but I have no desire to go back.

well, there is a right way and a wrong way to do things, but that is up to the individual. for instance, you wouldn't use a 18 gauge wire to carry 20 amps continuously. certain things have specs. and then there's common sense-which seems to be in short supply these days.

and why would i want to swap cams if i'm satisfied with mine??? not everybody needs to "win".

as far as oldspower goes, i'm not a rat, and i'm not baling, most people are fickle, i'm happy to not be like most people. that's why i am an Oldsmobile man. i've had my disagreements over at op, but i also understand that the internet is filled with pixels with personalities, nothing more. to me, bashing on another site is just childish. this place is starting to look more like rop to me, unbridled personalities. i'm just looking to learn and maybe pass along some good information, not stroke my ego. imo, this thread isn't even worthy of further existence, and should be deleted.

my $.02 worth

Yeah, here we sit. It seemed to go to page not available for a while yesterday, before going back to database error. I'm still holding out hope...

Well that's too bad. As I stated it wasn't my favorite site but I did learn more about the HEI over there.
When points give you a comfortable feeling you know it's bad, hehe. Man I am old

Hi.

To quell any rumors, here are the facts as I've been made aware. Seems as the server that we have been overpaying for for some time with very little if ANY technical support with our damaging issues as told us that "Sorry, you have ran out of hard drive space". Was it a virus that killed it? Quite possible. But as all well know, I am no expert (at anything)

WTF? How exactly does this happen when we set up a site with unlimited HD space.

Other than that, I have no answers. Oldspower isn't dead, its just comatose. You may see it come back completely renewed with some better support. Are we selling out? No. not exactly. However, expect the unexpected. All will be welcome to return, IF we decide to run "under new management".

Anyone that had my email, change the comcast to att.net. No, I'm not asking for help, or condolances. I felt the need to make an effort to let those that did enjoy the site know that we are researching other options.

Respectfully,

John

PS: Captjim, check your PM.
