Oldsmobile Solutions for trailers

I've seen several threads over the past few years where people were asking questions about IF their Olds could pull a trailer, how big a trailer they could pull, what special options would be needed, etc.

Well, 40 years later you can have the answer direct from Oldsmobile! These docs are scanned from original Oldsmobile brochures.

I have been considering setting up my toronado to tow my cutlass to the track. I saved these pictures to get an idea of what i could do.

There's nothing wrong with it, as know several guys who tow small race tire trailers behind sports cars. Don't recall the details, but remember seeing whats called a Hidden Hitch, where you can't even see it with the receiver hitch removed. Friend of mine, use to pull a 21' fiberglass boat, with his 84' Cutlass 5 liter. Maybe not the best vehicle for the job, but worked ok.

The pic is so small and even my bifocals couldn't make it out any detail. Glad to hear you're a keeper and the car's still running. Suggestion: Use your picture editor to resize the images to larger format. No insult intended to the pic or the car.

Oops

sorry Allen I re-sized it so I could upload them. It's a '66 Shelby GT350 and I have known this car since new and I'm the second owner. I knew the first owner since he bought it from Jack Loftus Ford (no longer in existance) in Hinsdale, Illinois.. I fell in love with it the day he drove it into my Dad's driveway. I dreamed of owning it one day and some years back that day came. She will be with me until I die and then it will be on to the next caretaker for her. What's the biggest single photo size I can upload at one time???

Any car's towing capabilities should be covered in the owner's manual, even back in the day.

I've thought about this trailer towing idea. I'd love to be able to take my Harley alone at times. Does anyone know if any manufacturer still makes trailer hitches for these old cars?

There are still quite a few aftermarket out there. Although I have not tried in many years, uhaul used to install them among other companies. JC Whitney sells generic hitches also.

That's an incredible story - I really appreciate where you're coming from. It doesn't matter to me what brand the car is, what's special is the bond you have for it. The fact that it's a Shelby GT350 that has survived with your dedication is a true representation of owner passion and committment. I'd drive with you any day.

Pic size? I've found that if I use my word editor and resize an original from mega resolution to 'document' size? The space it takes goes from (eg) 3megs to about 280kb. You lose a little resolution, but the image stays the same size. That's how I did the thumbnails that started this thread. The CO server will compress a pic that's slightly larger than acceptable parameters to make it fit. Generally the size you're looking for is 800X600pixels and up to ???9.54MB??? Just looked that up on the Manage attachments. I know that's wrong. Try closer to around 600kb. Maybe they've got a new filter I don't know about.....Anyway, try posting a larger pic of your Shelby-sounds like a great car!

You'd think. But no. Just info about towing your car, and to contact your Olds dealer for more info about trailering. (page 12/13 1972 Cutlass OM) That's why I posted the original Trailering brochure - to provide some of the info alluded to in the owners manual. What does your 67 and 73 manuals say? Kind of curious to see if the info is comparable to 72.

Light duty hitches for your need are probably still available at a local Autozone or O'Reillys. Usually they are bolt ons. Most of the new hitches are designed for heavier loads. You can also have one fabbed at a shop. Just know your tongue weight and load limit; especially related to braking. BTW, in case you haven't driven with a trailer behind? It takes a little getting used to the extra length of your vehicle both in the city or on the highway. Go for the hitch and trailer your Harley in style!
