Olds 330 Ultra High Compression

Hello all, I've recently somewhat accidentally aquired a 60k 1967 Oldsmobile 330 Ultra High Compression with the factory trans still attached.
Due to my rushing and not checking the block numbers (stupid I know) before buying I bought it after being told it was a 455. (Again it should of been obvious I know)

I know these motors actually made really good power for the time and their size, but I was aiming for a big block because I have a wagon and the added tourqe would be ideal

So what I'm what here long-windedly trying to ask is if the 330 is desirable at all so I can decide what to do with it.

So, you are asking what the engine is worth ?
Are you ready for another surprise ? I doubt you have a "powerglide" transmission connected to it.

The 330 has a steel crank- good for offset grinding to stroke a 350. Find a 350 and make a 385.

I'm summary yes, and three separate people of course told me it was a Powerglide... Apparently I just can't win with this one.

Lesson learned, most people's Oldsmobile knowledge can't be trusted.

For future reference: small blocks have casting numbers and big blocks are casting letters.

Can you show us the casting codes? You may still be wrong.

The alternator bracket bolt is in the hole for a small block. Same bracket was used for both SB and BB.

They were excellent engines. All had steel cranks. 64 only had some oddities e.g., rocker arm shafts vs individual arms and pivots. '67 is good.

The transmissions were SuperTurbine 300's a/k/a Jetaway's. They had a variable vane torque converter which changed the stall speed of the converter via a switch on the throttle linkage, these converters were called "Switch Pitch". In '68 the TH350 transmission entered the picture bringing improvements. Today the transmission of choice seems to be the 200R4.

A 330 HC in a Cutlass or Vista wagon with the proper transmission would be a nice daily driver. It's not for towing a heavy load or for a full-size wagon like a Custom Cruiser.

Good luck!!!

This is true for the head ID codes. The block casting number is on the shelf behind the water pump.

In order for you to use that transmission you'll need the firewall linkage switch or a suitable switch setup. If not it will be a real dog. The 330 was rated at 320hp in 67, certainly no slouch.

Also note the 67 330 had the 39 degree cam...

They use about half the fuel as a 455, if driven conscientiously. The transmission is as dependable as any transmission ever made before or since, maybe more.
There's that.

I don't mind my 330 at all. It makes plenty of torque for my car.

If you decide you don't want the engine, I'd be interested in the intake, carb and air cleaner base..
