oil pan quart capacity question

if an oil pan quart capacity is 5
does that mean we can put 5 qts in plus whatever the oil filter holds (which usually is 1)....making it a total of 6 qts that can be used.....
or
is it 4 qts in the pan plus the 1 for the filter

The engine capacity is 5 qts including filter. Note some filters don't hold a full qt.

if the engine capacity is 5 qts....when we have a 7 quart oil pan, is the engine capacity at that time still 5....or 7 ?

im just curious, since i never really put it to a test, since i usually fill the engine with 5 qts total, but just thinking if the pans limit is 5...and the filter holds whatever amount....is that 5 plus what the filter holds ?

Although you did not mention you had a 7 qt aftermarket pan. You capacity should still be 5 qts. You should be using an extended pickup. The object of the 7 qt pan is not to run 7 qts but to lower the oil level well below the rotating assy.
