Ode to the Musclecar

Ode to the Musclecar
Hey all, just wanted to share something I wrote some 24 yrs ago...I call it "Ode to the Musclecar."
It all started back in 1964,
Nothing like this had been done before.
Sales were slumping,
Something had to be done.
So Pontiac decided to build "The Great One."
They dropped a big engine in a mid-size car.
It was the craziest thing that had been done so far.
But soon everyone realized that maybe they were wrong,
That Pontiac had the right idea all along.
Then they were all scrambling to build their own,
Hoping to claim the Musclecar Throne.
Chevy had its Chevelle SS, Olds its 442,
Chrysler had its Hemi, just to name a few.
Now there was a war raging through the streets
To see who could put the other to defeat.
Horsepower and torque were the name of the game,
And when you lost a battle, you were humbly tamed.
Legendary heroes ruled during this time
To take their place in the Musclecar Shrine.
Forever they are remembered the mightiest of all.
Always willing and able to answer the battle call.
Their time of command lasted just seven years,
Brought to an end by the government's fears.
"You're polluting the air with your high octane gas.
At this rate our ozone will never last."
Then the insurance companies joined the government's side.
They increased the premiums and made the rates too high.
Before we knew it, the day had arrived
When the age of the Musclecar no longer survived.
But on the pages of time, their mark shall remain,
And automotive history will never be the same.
They will always be remembered, honored and restored
To recreate the memories of an era before.
May they always be here for us to admire,
For all to feel the passion of automotive desire.
We have not nor will not let the Musclecar die.
Forever may it live in the hearts of you and I!

A Car With Soul
Just seeing it's classic lines has some magic appeal. When you start the car something starts in you as well. Your right foot pulls on a cable to open the throttle, basic and direct. It's just simple air and gas it's rawest form doing it's thing. The sounds and vibrations become one with your body. You hear and feel the air getting sucked into the carburetor and blowing out the exhaust. When you shift, your hand can feel the linkage mechanically changing things up. When you let the clutch out your body is sucked back into the seat. You see the hood shake a bit as the nose rises. Give it a bit more gas and the tires scream as reminder that you are not just the driver but have become part of this machine. You sense how everything in this car is connected in a special way not common today. This car has been deliberately put together, one selected piece at a time, to become more than just a machine, but a car with soul.

That a pretty creative poem. Small detail however is Chevy's 454 didn't hit the street scene until 1970. They did install a handful of 396's into Chevelles in 1965 (Z-16) and those cars are now gold mines.
