Odd throttle problem

I have a 72 cutlass and I was driving the back roads tonight getting on it here and there and I went to brake at the stop sign and it was running 1700 rpm without touching the pedal. When I got home I popped the hood and the linkage was fine I'm not sure what' going on

Did the choke engage?

Sounds lit the QJ secondary stuck partly open.

easy fix, snap the secondary linkage open, then oil both sides of the secondary throttle shaft and work the oil in with the ENGINE OFF.

Good luck hope this helps.

I would not recommend lubricating any throttle linkage or bushings. The oil simply attracts underhood grit.

Look for binding in the throttle cable. As the individual wires in the cable start to fray, they dig into the teflon liner in the sheath.

Look for sticky residue on the linkage.

Look for a choke coil gone bad or a swelled throttle body gasket that may be causing the secondaries to hang up.

Look for worn throttle shaft bushings that can either admit additional air or can let the throttle plates get off center, allowing them to hang up.

Also make sure the throttle return spring isn't stretched out.

Here' a little more info it's a Holley with a manual choke and I did check all of the linkage and springs which most of the parts are somewhat new. I think the secondaries are to blame from not driving it much and I never drive it hard so i will clean everything and see how it responds

Make sure the manual choke arm is all the way forward and the choke flap is all the way open. Check your vacuum lines.
