NJ DMV Historic Rant

So my brother drives to the closest DMV to get historic plates on his 72 442. It is about 20 miles away. He has everything required with the exact pictures needed and gets turned away because the car has a factory rear wing. They said it is not original and must come off (at least for pictures). Seems a little too picky or people there do not know what could have come on cars back in the day. The wing could have been dealer installed, I know 71 was the last year for this part. I am starting to hear other stories like this. Seems they try to find every way to discourage antique plate issuance...

I'd stick to your guns, tell them it's factory, and speak to their supervisor.

You guys have never dealt with the NJ DMV.

Just do whatever they say, and nobody gets hurt.

That being said, there is one somewhere north of 78, around P-burg, that is easier to deal with, but that's probably a 2 hour drive for you.

For Sure! He went to Flemington, one of the few places you can get the QQ plates in person. Heard a story recently that a 1990 truck was not collectable enough to warrant QQ plates even though its 25 years old.... A friend was rejected for having a factory luggage rack on the trunklid of his Triumph GT6.

F the man!

I am also in NJ, I chose not to get QQ plates because of the restrictions. Is there any other benefit besides the fact that it is cheaper?

When did the NJ DMV start using AACA Judges as employees? I am frankly amazed that a non-Olds fanatic even knows this! Geeze, this is more strict judging than I've seen as OCA national meets!

I had a cop ask me why I run regular plates on my 88 instead of historic plates. I told him that because the price is the same there's no reason to subject myself to jumping through hoops.

The price in NJ is not the same. You pay once, something like $30, and you're good for life, with no inspections ever.

That might be worth it. Some of it would depend if they light the hoops on fire before they tell you to jump through them.

In NY, for my convertible with historical plates is $54 with the 1 year registration. When you're ready to renew your registration, you have 3 choices of paying your renewal with different prices. (1) If you want to keep the same plate design with the same plate #, (2) Keep the same plate # with a vintage design, or (3) Have a different # with a vintage design. I have to get the yearly safety inspection for $10 no matter how many miles you put in.

NJ no longer requires (it's notoriously corrupt) safety inspection for any non-commercial vehicle.
They do require emissions inspections for non-historic vehicles.

Maine does not require a safety inspection for historic vehicles (and does not require emissions inspections).

I did not go through emissions or put a front plate on, have yet to be pulled over. I have a 1982 Florida inspection and for some reason I just don't want it removed I think that was Florida's last year for inspections. I am in NJ

Yeah. Inspections in general are a scam (Jersey's particularly so, because they were conducted by a private "contractor," who was paid per inspection, thus inducing them to fail you and require re-inspection as many times as possible - my father was once failed for having a non-obstructing car show sticker on his windshield, and they made him get inspected again, rather than just scrape it off).

There is no difference in equipment-related accidents between inspection and non-inspection states.

Too many messages to go through and too many clicks to see what's there and try to delete them - I just gave up.

You can always e-mail me by selecting the "Send E-Mail" link instead of the "Send PM" link.

If you get a ticket for inspection in NJ no money goes to the town that writes the ticket 100% DMV. I recently got a ticket for expired DL, it wasn't even a week over. I paid ticket renewed my DL and then I got a fine in the mail from DMV for $100 and that is for the next three years. They are nothing but crooks...

And here is how they determined that the wing doesnt belong, they googled images for 1972 442 and most of the pictures that came up showed cars with no wing...

NJ is corrupt...
We do things a little different round here.. Haven't ya heard of Crisp Christie....LOL
Only here could you have your entire staff fired for BrigeGate and not know about it or steal billions of dollars set aside to repay a pension fund "PensionGate" and make side deals and give jobs to your friends and family.... DMV is a piece of cake for these crooks...
Same deal with my Omega... They don't have SX stripe,,,,duhhh

And here I though that EVERY 1970-72 442 on the road today has a wing, W-25 hood, and W-30 stripes...
