New location for a build sheet to be found

OK, at least this is a location I'd not heard of before! I had pulled the drivers side fender off the 1971 Cutlass 4 door I'm parting out. I removed the inner wheel well and saw what I thought was a wad of newspaper tucked under the fenders wheelwell lip. I pulled it out and was ready to toss it when I realized it was a build sheet. The previous owner told me it had been purchased by his mother in Montana, and the dealer listed is in Billings MT. One other interesting note is I see a box where the typed code was crossed out and another one was hand written in it's place (box 50, right hand side of last picture). This is a Fremont built car and the first time I'd seen a change like this. Has anyone else seen a hand written change on a build sheet?

Wow, John, I'm impressed.

I've never heard of that one before.

Very cool! Is there a dealer code for Ryan Olds that you can see?

The build sheet for my '70 GTO (found above the gas tank) has a "pen and ink" change in box 74, in which "K20B" is crossed out and something else is written in that I can't read. Also, in box 106, G78X14 is crossed out and "G70X14" is written in (the rest of that line, "2X4 B/W -FRYU" remains as is). Towards the bottom right side of the sheet, "Refer PLN5851 for tire code change" is written in and it is signed by "DChandler" and dated "10/30" [1969]. This car is also a Fremont CA car.

I also found the remnants of a build sheet in the driver-side fender of my car! In the area behind the wheelwell, down where it bolts to the body. I originally thought it was a bunch of dried leaves, but then I saw the printing on a larger scrap. It crumbled to pieces when I tried to remove it, but I did keep a few legible bits. My car was also built in Freemont.

Sounds like we're seeing a pattern here! Maybe Fremont had someone on the assembly line doing pen and ink changes and stuffing build sheets in this location John

My '67 Delmont was built in Kansas City. It had the code for a 3.08 axle ratio printed on the build sheet crossed out and the 2.78 code handwritten over it. When I checked the factory literature, sure enough the 2.78 was specified as standard axle with a 330/TH400 combination.

My 70 442 is a Fremont car, and I found a perfect build sheet on top of the gas tank, as well as 2 soft trim build sheets in the seats.

The dealer that sold the car is still in business.

Yes, my Fremont sheet also has handwritten changes in Box 16 (Rear Spring). 'NK' was changed to 'PR' and it appears the change was initialed. Would love to know what it means and interesting that others have similar changes.

I am new to this website. Does anyone have an idea how I can tell by the vin number if my car is a true 442? I bought it as such and now am selling it and everybody wants to know what proof I have. Just my word and the word of a friend I bought it from. By the way, its a 66 442 with a 425 and 3 spd automatic if you know anybody interested. Nice turn key car.

Well, it doesn't sound like a 442.

As far as I know, in '66 the 442 came with the 400 engine, and the 2-speed Jetaway if it was an auto.

Of course, NO Cutlass models ever came with the 425.

As for VIN - 442 was an option package that year, not a model line, so it is not reflected in the VIN.

If your car was made in Lansing and it has a 4V on the tag then it is a 442. Do some google searches on 1966 442 4v and see what you can find.

Since you're new to the site, it should be explained to you that if you have a question like this, you should start a new thread and not "hijack" an existing thread. Besides going off-subject, you won't be getting the attention to your question that a new thread would generate.

It could still be a 442 with the drive train replaced. And I'm sure you me "no A-body models", as there were F85 models in '66 that could be 442s and were not Cutlasses.

No, not in '66. The V would be a column 5 (5V) in '66 and '67 (4V was '65 only). Google won't help you there.
We will be getting the accessory codes posted on Wild About Cars in the near future.
