Hi Everybody
For years I've been collecting parts for a 1965 442 Fremont project car, and a 1967 442 with California emissions. After reading through a post by a fellow member here looking for a specific breather I'm thinking I may have it. But... some of you likely know the feeling of selling a part only to later discover that you needed it after all! So I'm posting pictures of three breathers I have with the hope that someone here can tell me which ones are correct for my two project cars, and then I'll know what actually are extra parts! John

The first is on the 1964 F85 wagon I recently purchased. I don't plan to keep it original but make it into a driver with a extra 350/350 setup I have laying around.

Then the next photo is a breather on a 1966 330 that has California emissions.

The third one is on a 1967 425 with California emissions. This last one looks most like the photo on the parts wanted thread.

TK, thank you for clarifying that I don't have the correct one for a 1965. This is one of those times when I think about how easy it would have been to keep the same shape for several years. But instead they made different ones every year!

The first one is a PCV valve and not a breather. The last one is a breather that goes back to the air cleaner on CA emission cars. The PCV valve would be in the other valve cover for your 67.

Is there a difference in breathers in 67 for Ca. emissions and non emissions? My 67 is a Lansing built car but had Ca. emissions. I took all the emission stuff off but i need the breather. It has a tube that connects it to the air cleaner.

Photo on very right is a Fremont built car that was sold outside of California. Olds shipped them with PCV compatible valve covers but PCVs were only required IN California. Fremont used a plug in the PCV hole for those cars shipped outside CA.

Going back to my years as a state inspector (NY), I'm pretty certain that a PCV system was FEDERALLY mandated for model year 1963 and up.

The weird thing is the first photo also has it installed on the wrong side of the engine.
I know on my engine I finally had to use the PCV valve and pipe from I believe a 394 of the same year like in the first photo and pull the guts out of it, put in some of that shredded metal breather material, it looks stock and only a total Olds snob would know the difference.

Re: the 64 fremont closed PCV system. learned something yesterday. The PCV valve was in the passenger valve cover and there was only a pipe connected from the driver valve cover grommet to the side of the air cleaner. There was not a breather filter on the 64's. The filter was affixed to the inside of the air cleaner. Part numbers as follows:

Pipe: 385280
Driver grommet: 385284
Connector from pipe to air cleaner (appears to be a hose): 385285
Passenger Grommet: 385283

I'd like to see pictures of that one, i got a 64 aircleaner it has the breather hook up in the snorkle from a guy here local well Mateca, i'm assuming it's Ca system originally.Nick

The hole in the snorkel is for the PCV valve. It is not a brether, although it looks like a breather. See the photo below. There is a hole in the driver side of the aircleaner for a filter that hooks to the parts I listed in my post above. The filter in the photo goes on the inside. This photo is from my Fremont built 442. I have a fremont built holiday coupe with the same hole on the driver side of the air cleaner. The snorkel, facing the passenger side also has a hole for the pipe that connects to the PCV valve.

Ok thats good to know i have a 49 state air cleaner and breather-pcv that must be what the small vacuum port is for on the side.Nick

65 F85 Fremont built car, closed PCV system. The set-up is as follows:

1. Filter (post by TK-65 in above post) part #387198 goes into passenger valve cover grommet (part #385284)
2. Top of filter has a grommet (part #581112). Pipe inserts into filter grommet on one end and then into air cleaner snorkel on the other end. Not sure about snorkel grommet part number
3. Driver valve cover grommet (part #385283) accepts the PCV valve. Hose (part #383304) connects to top of PCV valve and is routed to back of carburetor.

Note: 64 F85 Fremont cars have an opposite set-up and NO filter, just a pipe from driver valve cover to driver side of air cleaner. Filter is located in the air cleaner. PCV valve goes in the passenger valve cover. See my post above.

Yes, the small port on the PCV valve (see photo below), is for a vacuum line that opens and closes the plate within the valve. These gum up over time and do not close properly. I've cleaned them with GUNK to bring them back to life.
