I realize that we’re living in a world where privacy is of the utmost importance.
But, does it serve us all better if we fill out our descriptions accurately with the location and then sign off using our real first name?
1. All too often we have to ask, “Location, please?”
…When this could just be handled by filling out your location in your avatar column.
2. Not sure about everyone else but, isn’t it kinda tiring and feel SO impersonal to respond to Hot442W30RocketSled69?
…When you could just respond to Dave or Mike or Bill?
We’re all pretty tight knit here. Just wondering why folks don’t add a real first name sign off?
Some of us do…never met a real trickster on here…not sure why there’s such anonymity?

BTW…I keep a list of folks user names versus real names. Get’s real tiring.
Seeing as a good portion of us are on FB…why the secrecy?
Took me forever to figure out who Joe Padavano was.
I am not on Fakebook. Location, even if only the state you reside makes sense in the avatar.
The problem is first names.......... I have seen two "Joe's" on the same thread and it was confusing to follow who said what. There are frequently more than one Greg, John, or Bill on the same thread. Using the first 6 or 8 characters of a Username is less confusing....especially if one is putting out misinformation.
.....Just my two cents worth.
All good ideas but I see a wrinkle in the plan. On my mobile device the location and real name aren’t displayed. I see that info when I’m on the computer but not when I’m on the mobile device.
See what I see below:
The wrinkle is your mobile device ? Or does this site need to do something new ? Personally, to many people say the smart phones will do everything a computer can do. I only get on here with my laptop or a real computer.
I posted a reply earlier.
Now I'm getting pop ups and emails about getting a young bride from Europe and China
so my question is. Is there a limit on how many you can have?

Peter, this topic comes up every now and then. I agree with you but also respect that others prefer the anonaminity (sp). I doubt that it shall change. WOW! Am I a winner? Check the number of posts I have with this one!

Reason: add info
There was a time that there were so many Eric's I had to separate myself from the herd. That's why my sig says (other) Eric. I get the privacy issue which is why it's not mandatory.
Social media maps which display a user's (real) name and location are not the best method to protect your privacy, they're a very poor manner in which to protect your privacy. In many respects, the notion of where you are NOT can be the most damaging as social media users garner information about where people are and where they are not located. Users w/ ill-intent harvest this information build profiles and create deceptive practices both physical and non-physical in nature. Take the case of the couple who was traveling around the world (they were millionaires). This happened two years ago (this is only an example). They broadcast from their luxury sailboat yacht their daily location. Somali pirates boarded, held them for ransom then shot & killed them. This is not an isolated incident - it happens in the Philippines, Antilles, you name it - it happens off the coast of Washington. It also happens within this country on land via the many social media outlets where members broadcast their real names and location. There is no reason to post your real name and location on any social media network - do it in private with people you know & trust.

I had thought this myself when I first joined, but very few people were using their name so I just assumed it was some unwritten forum etiquette and followed suit. I am on other forums and it is the same there. So when in Rome...
I also like the idea of first names. To me it is much more personable and friendly. I'm onboard.

I think you summed it up well.
It's standard fare...and we were ALL a little anxious in the beginning...but seriously-
If you’re trying to reconnect with past owners of your Olds or match a mystery photo that came with the car, I’ve had decent luck using face2social to track down social accounts tied to old pictures. Helped me confirm a previous seller was legit before I bought my project. Little things like that can make these long-term builds smoother while you swap stories with folks in threads like this.
