Name That Air Cleaner!
Welcome to Name That Air Cleaner. Where even the average Joe can be a winner!
This air cleaner was found in the trunk of a 1968 442, but it may not fit this car....
Note the Rocket 400 decal, PCV and hot air riser locations.
Those are all of your clues, now it's time to play - Name That Air Cleaner!

Contestant #1, Alain, joins us from Sunny California. He enjoys Tobassco and Ford Pintos. Alain, your answer has been tallied and the judges are ready for Contestant #2!

I'm leaning more toward a Vista Cruiser wagon. They could also have a 400 engine. Is there a code on the side of the air cleaner? I'm thinking a two letter code and a number with six digits. If the air cleaner hasn't been repainted that will tell us the original application.

Contestant #2 joins us from wine country Oregon. He enjoys show-tunes and translating Russian poetry. This contestant has requested additional input and the judges have agreed. The number on the air cleaner is 6484804. The judges await your final answer.

Name That Air Cleaner respectfully issues a correction. Contestant #1 hails from The Great White North Canada. He enjoys all films by Gerard Depardieu and Ford Pintos.

And yours should have letters OS next to that number. I'm not a 1968 guru either but I believe the correct one for a 1968 442 would have the letters OG on it. Here's a photo of the letters and numbers next to them.

The judges have deliberated and have found that the secret code "OS" indicating Vista Cruiser, ensures the win for 2blu442. Now for your prize package! 2blu442, you have won an additional year working as a thankless moderator for Classic Oldsmobile.com. In this capacity you will enjoy playing grown up to a forum of immature grease monkeys with repressed feelings of Ford Pinto love. Congratulations!

OK, I poked around the garage and came up with a nice OS air cleaner and a rough OG. It looks like the OG had someone beat a dent in the back to fit against an HEI distributor... then they may have driven over the snorkel! But its clear enough that the snorkel is at least an inch longer on the OS and that the breather tube comes in at a different location. Plus the hot air pipe is further out on the OS housing. Here's some pictures side by side.

Too late Yellowstatue, if that is your real name.... The judges have already bestowed the punishment, er, I mean award to 2blu442.
A bit of internet search suggests OS is '69 400 and also includes D88 455. Don't know if that includes '69 442. Maybe I can just switch my valve cover grommets around and make this one work?

I don't think you can switch grommets because the '68 uses a small filter with square fitting in hole. You would have to make up something to adapt. Don't modify the '69 breather because the snorkel is also the same on a '70 and some one might want it for that very reason.
