My last week Freon Odyssey .
I'm only posting this for individuals that could be as inexperienced as I was in my purchases last week .
I have a completely stock 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Hoilday Coupe 442 . Hopefully in the last weeks of restoration finishing . My entire A/C system is intact and holding pressure . The shop doing the work asked me to pick up at least 4 lbs of R-12 refridgerant . Shop indicated there were a half a dozen options on Craigs List Phoenix AZ . Picked the guy closest that had advertised 10 lb cans for 150.00 .. Long story short
I bought something called " FREEZE 12 " . Huh , can said R 12 on it .. GRRR.
I have been advised NOT to use . Seems Freeze 12 is maybe 134 A with additives or something ? Useable , but not the right stuff . This was Friday morning @ 10 :15 AM .
I told my guy , that I did NOT see too many other options . He said " No Jimi , there were 2 guys that had 30 lb bulk tanks in the neighborhood ." Priced between 495.00 and 899.00 dollars .
Fast forward to 4:00 pm Friday afternoon , and I'm meeting a guy I've never met before , in the Parking Lot of a Burger King off the I - 17 and Peoria Ave . AND , I handing him nearly 500 bucks for a generic looking jug of the ancient R-12 .. My shop checked it out , and they are going to buy the other 16lbs for @ 20.00 per lb .
Moral ? I'm set , but does EVERYTHING have to be so wickedly difficult ?
Take Away ? R - 12 is out there , Freeze 12 not acceptable for O.E. 67 A/C systems .. I'm sure there will be more to this , but for now , AOK .
Yikes . JT

Yep, lots of R-12 out there still.
Back in the early 2000s I was told there was a huge supply on the market, mostly due to so many shops back in the 90s telling folks they needed to convert their R12 systems to R134A, so the R-12 didn't get used up.
Just last week one of the Tucson club members sent an e-mail saying he had a bunch o' cans he non longer needed as he had retrofitted everything to R-134A.
