Music for the Road

Been preparing my Monte Carlo for the Power Tour in a few weeks. One of the things I did was replace the redone original speakers with some precise reproductions of both size and impedance, which sound decent.

Old man and I are going for as long as he, I, and the car will take. I have a FM modulator and a phone with a headphone jack and many gigs worth of space to load up mp3s.

He's an older dude of 73, and, although we listened to moldy oldies driving around in the 80s when we were both much younger, both he and I appreciate classic rock. He doesn't appreciate my tastes in metal.

So, I need bands. I have, so far, the collected works of:

1. Creedence Clearwater Revival.
2. Pink Floyd.
3. ZZ Top.
4. Dire Straights.

Will probably get the Stones, the Eagles, some Roy Orbison, maybe some Tom Petty, perhaps the Hollies. Animals, Bobby Fuller Four, Led Zeppelin.

He does own a Flying Burrito Brothers LP, even though I have never listened to a song of theirs.

What do you all recommend?

Should google play list already made on google. You just download the songs, no need to search. Some great playlist out there.

There's a British band of fellas they call themselves the Beatles, they do have a couple catchy ditties...

Depending how hard the old man likes his classic rock, the who, deep purple, AC DC, van halen, blue oyster cult maybe cabdidates

Cars and music both peaked between 1956-1972. Both my playlist and my "drive list" fit within those bounds.

Bob Seger, Boston, The Moody Blues, The Four Seasons. You may try downloading hits from the 60's-70's

Depending on the radio in your car you might be able to connect you iPhone via cable or Bluetooth. Download Pandora and you can get most any venue you like. For five bucks a month you can get it commercial free.

I am rocking the vintage 72 3 speaker mono AM/FM. I have little transmitter and a cord to my phone. We are going to be in the sticks of the south, so I want the music onboard my phone.

Canned Heat "On the road again", Bowie, Sabbath, Metallica, Jethro Tull, Rush, The Band...., I truly pity young people and what they call music today. Good post, I like all the other suggestions.

Great responses so far.

Current is:
Complete works:
Pink Floyd
CCR
Tom Petty
Eagles
The Who
The Guess Who

Some of:
The Stones
Led Zeppelin
Bobby Fuller Four
Jimmy Buffet
Roy Orbison
The Animals

I like Bon Jovi but it's a little too new for him, and ACDC he doesn't particularly care for. Rush is about the only band I don't like (the guitar is awesome, but Geddy Lee's voice grates on me.)

I may rip and upload my best of Jethro Tull cd, that's a good idea. Stevie Ray Vaughn might work.

Bob Seger is a must-have in the list. If you don't already have his greatest hits cd, his material is now available for downloading. He *finally* relented and agreed to have most of his works available on iTunes and other streaming services last year, being one of the last major holdouts in the music industry. Just don't ignore your speedo when listening to Hollywood Nights... something about that duel drum track that makes people go too fast!

You're going to need some Allman Brothers. "Jessica", despite being post-Duane, is one of the best road songs ever.

Hot Rod Power Tour is a blast. I've been on several. But I won't even leave my neighborhood without some Springsteen. The Rising CD and earlier being my preference.

Have a good and safe trip.

Since he is 73, don't forget some of the 60s. Green Onions comes to mind. The Ventures also. Blues Brothers.

I thought of this post again as Slayer came up on my Spotify playlist. Pretty sure your dad would hate it, but might be funny to sneak some in to see the stinkface you get.

X2 on that.. Got to see them at the Gahden in Boston two years ago. Christine McVie had just rejoined them for the tour. they nailed every song.

Note: At my age, I only go to concerts now where people sit down.

Ghost Riders In The Sky by The Outlaws is a good tune. A country suggestion is Johnny Cashs One Piece At A Time.
Hope you and your dad have a nice safe trip.

The Doors are a good idea. I am not an Allman Brothers fan. We had a "singing challenge" in high school and 50% of the people picked Ramblin Man to sing because it fit their latter day hippie dream, although I'm the only one of the class that has actually been on US 41.
