master cylinder

master cylinder

Just looking for some input, I have a leaking master cylinder and need to either rebuild or replace it. I believe it is original to the car, but I am thinking of buying a new one and just holding onto the old one. Just wondering what the thought is, it is on a 72 CS convertible. Also any recommendations on where to purchase?

You can rebuild them. If you want to keep it "OE". It's a snap ring and the inner plunger comes out.

Personally I'd just buy a new/remanned unit. I just did my 74 a few weeks ago. Got one from vatozone for about 20 bucks. Make sure you get one with a bleed kit. It's nothing more than some plastic fittings and tubes. You fill the resivoir, put the fittings and tubes one, tubes into your resivoir and use a big screwdriver to manually actuate it. Takes about 20-30 pumps to get all the small air bubbles out. Then bleed your brakes. Start at the passenger rear, drivers rear, passenger front drivers front and your good to go.

It probably goes with out saying, but take care to keep your fluid off the car. Stuff is nasty and will eat some paint

One of the problems with rebuilding it is that the cylinder may very likely be pitted after 43 years. Probably all new ones are going to be Chinesium. I would agree that a good rebuilt is probably the best. As mentioned above, be sure and bench bleed it in a vise. Good luck on bleeding the brakes because they can be a pain.
